Ok, so my plans changed midway through my first AR build.

The first change - I was going to do it peice by peice over the years. But having that stripped lower in my gun cabinet was driving me crazy so I've pretty much bought everything in a 3 month span. The good people at Visa will be getting their bonuses this year after all.

The second change - I was going to put together a short barreled rig. So I bought a collapsable stock for that. But, for the most part they were more expensive that I liked, the more I looked at them the less I liked them and I came across a 20" upper that caught my fancy.

So as I await the delivery of my upper I'm left wondering - is the collapsable stock a waste on a 20" upper? Should I ditch it and get a normal buttstock? Or is it ok?

Anyone here running longer uppers with collapsable stock? Pics? Reviews?

Carbines use a different buffer and spring than 20" rifles.
I have no idea if a rifle buffer and spring will work in a collapsible carbine butt tube.
I would suggest that you consider selling the carbine unit, and install a standard rifle one. Or, hang on to the carbine unit against the day that you acquire a carbine upper.

I used a Carbine stock on one of my 20" AR's, and I liked it. I believe some C7's use this configuration, do they not? I would try the carbine stock and if you like it, awesome, if not, buy an A2 stock and then sell your carbine stock. The A2 stock uses a different buffer tube, buffer and spring, so be sure to buy a complete assembly, not just the buttstock if you are going with an A2.

i had the same thought going thru my head. i think it would look gret,
the 12 inch GI JOES hade that kind of rifle.

I have built at least one in that configuration, and was quite happy with the results. If meomry serves it shot quite well, was reliable, and I belive the specs were as follows:

  • Cerro forge - A3 upper with FA & DC T-marked
  • Rifle Gas tube with Pin
  • 20" Wilson Hbar chome lined barrel 1 in 9 twist
  • Delta ring assembly
  • Yankee Hill Machine 5M1 Compensator 1/2x28
  • YHM Quad Rail, Rifle length 2 Piece Handguard (YHM-9803)
  • 3 pannel rail covers + 4 lader style
  • RRA - new Semi Auto bolt & carrier group
  • Colt Charging Handel
  • YHM A2 style folding BUIS (not pictured)
  • DPMS Lower
  • LMT 6 position mil spec carbine stock

I found an old pics

I have two, one for my wife and one for any guests that come shooting with us that are of smaller stature, that way the rifle can fit them properly!!

C7A2's....the majority of the troops are issued this configuration in Afghanistan. Although I have a 16" on my system, the 20" worked well for the sandbox.
