Hey Gents

Starting to look for parts for my first AR build and need some help finding parts. My spikes lower should be in the mail soon so its starting to get my attention. I'm looking to do a C7A2/M16A4 style of build and would like to know if there are any complete 20'' uppers worth buying out there in Canada? If not, any 20'' barrels? Any suggestion on where to look would be great. I was thinking about getting Saskatoon Gun Works to hook me up with the closest thing they can manage with Aero parts.

Another question would be is it worth it to free float the hand guard? It would go against the look i'm going for however I don't intend on making a exact clone. I do want a fixed FSB and would like to keep the furniture and hand guard (or hand guard panels if needed) OD green to maintain the C7 look.

Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Cheers,
RadioDread

I'm in the process of building a C8 but I feel a lot of the parts hunting I did will be applicable to you. The C7/C8 route isn't cheap however. If you are in need of green furniture, I found the set at Calgary Shooting Centre which is a CGN sponsor. A lot of the Ambi parts like the mag release and charging handle you can find in EE or Nordic Marksman (also a sponsor). I don't know how far you're planning to go with the C7 clone but I am bleeding through my wallet to make this project happen at the moment. Some parts I haven't had luck with (Colt Canada Tri-ad Rail and Elcan C79 sight) but bit by bit it will come together.

You can find surplus C7 uppers with barrel and fixed carry handle. I think Wolverine has one? Not too sure. Otherwise, Nordic Marksman and Bullseye I believe carry the Colt Canada /Diemaco uppers. I also recall seeing the complete cold hammer forged barrel assembly that is correct for the C7/C8 (20" or 15.7") somewhere. Check sponsors.

Hope that helps

Colt Canada SA20 uppers are perfect for what you're talking about, if you can find a used one. The "Stag Retro" 20" uppers are also a good choice (albeit with a lower-quality barrel), and are available for about $600 including the carry handle, but no BCG. I got mine from Arms East.

Stag 20" retro upper on an SA20 lower:

With regard to free-floating, I had one free-floated under the handguards, done up to look like an A4. It was nice, but heavier with the free float tube. It was really accurate, but the weight penalty was too much IMHO. Sold it years ago.

Thanks! I hadn't looked at Nordic yet. Thinking something like the Vortex Spitfire 3x for an optic as the Elcan is way out of my budget at this point. I half thought about just holding onto the lower for now and looking to pickup a complete SA20 off the EE also.

Correct, going flat top. And while I say "clone" I guess it should be more along the lines of "inspired by". I will probably end up something like the M16A4 with C7A2 furniture.

Yeah, careful with the word "clone", use it incorrectly and the clone gods won't be happy.

I: Clones are really cool, but I bet I can improve upon the design with an inspired build.
II. I'm disappointed with my inspired build because it just doesn't scratch the itch and no one wants to see pics of my rifle. I bet I can sub out a few parts that are more expensive for cheaper options.
III. Alright, why did I waste my money on those non-spec parts when I knew I wouldn't be pleased. I'll settle for a 90% build with some minor, non-clone subs.
IV. Alright, I admit I am powerless to resist a spec clone, and I atone for my prior sins and building crap-tier builds that neither I like not anyone else wants to see. I will now build as to-spec as I reasonably can minus getting an M16A1 lower.
V. All your clone are belong to me. I am ECPrevatte, destroyer of clones.
