I was wondering if a 20Ga would be adequate for shooting deer with slugs(are they available?) I have a 20ga Mossberg O/U and would like to use it in a primitive weapons season.
Thanks

Yes. Target the mossy and see where it is shooting. I found the bottom barrel shot more consistently than the top on mine. (browning) With foster type Winchester or Remington slugs 75 yards is about the limit with your bead sights.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a 20 Ga slug on deer. Make sure you only buy standard rounds as the Sabots are designed for fully rifled barrels only. Also don't shoot them out of chokes tighter than modified. Full chokes and slugs don't mix. If you can get Challenger they have a rifling design built for standard smoothbores.

unless your province has laws very different form most, a 20 ga. slug gun is NOT a "primitive weapon" - better check the regulations!

Thanks for the reply's.
Longwalker, In the area I'm in (Alberta 212) it's a bow zone only but there is also a primitive weapons season in December, where you can use Bow, Crossbow, muzzleloader, and shotgun.

depending on what you consider standard?

i guess everyone has asked this question once...

sabot slugs are for rifled barrels

foster or rifled slugs are for smoothbore

then there are many choices of chokes, from what i hear improved proves to be the best, never tried with other chokes
