i have been wondering, if replacing the bullet of a 20 gauge rifled factory load, with a hornady sst 50 cal bullet and sabot, any chance this may work?
Been really hard to find Federal Copper slugs, plus the price is C$ 34,00 for 5 rounds.
Ok ... so you will need a known recipe for that sabot and bullet weight ... And then you need to find all the components for that recipe. That will be the hard part ... unfortunately.
Removig the projectile (slug) from a commercial round ... and substituting that projectile with you sabot ... is pretty risky. You will have no idea what the pressure of that round will be ...
Most commercial slugs are Foster type slugs .... and which will squeze easily through a forcing cone or a choke. Sabots behave differently ...
If its for hunting I would just buy factory and carry on. How many will you shoot in a year? By the time you test a load I think it would take years to recoup what you spent in components. If you like to play around then by all means have at er. Ballistic Products has slug loading data and as previously posted Bilozir and some others in Canada may have components.
Well the 12ga takes a 0.729 sabot and the 20ga takes a 0.615 sabot, the bullet in the sabot varies, I have seen 50 cal in 12ga and 20ga.
The original poster seems to be asking about taking a foster slug out and loading a 50 cal sabot and bullet from a muzzleloader, which I do not see working at all seeing as the 50 cal sabot is very undersized.
