ANyone know where to get components to reload 20 gauge slugs? Wanting a 20g with rifled barrel but looking at the price of slugs will limit shooting. Wondering if anyone is reloading 20 gauge slugs? If so, where are the components coming from?

ok. I am an experienced rifle loader but have never cast my own bullets. What is involved? Is reloading shotgun slug economical? That is the main reason I am considering this as I want to be able to shoot for fun but not break the bank.

Reloading slugs is cheaper than loading shot loads. The wads are usually found 20 to 30 feet from the muzzle. Cast iron pot over a propane burner. Ladle and mould. Cast like any other bullet. You have to insert and remove a plug every time to form the hollow base. Lyman has a cast bullet manual that explains it well. Factory sabots are pricey, reloaded sabot slugs are econmcal to shoot 50 in a setting. Should be something on U tube about Lyman sabot slugs.

You can make excellent cheap (real cheap) wax slugs by buying the cheapest target loads you can find. These provide excellent practice to about 25 yards.

A wax slug is the full charge of lead pellets with melted wax, to hold it all together as a cylinder. It hits as a solid, then blows apart. They make nice round holes in the target.

The other thing you can do is use the drill bit in the video to remove the crimp. Then dump the shot and stick in a slug. I buy slugs at the gun show.

No but all I've read on the Hammerhead slug is positive.Going to try a sample pack in 12ga for my son's Savage BA slug gun.Only thing that turns me off is the only data provided for these is using Cheddite hulls and they are crap.

The loaded wax slug round looks like this. It will cycle through a pump just fine, and it quite accurate to at least 25 yards. Good enough for plinking and practice.

If you cut the round open, this is what the slug looks like. The original shot with the air space replaced with wax, holding it all together. I use parrifin wax sold at the store for canning. I add one wax crayon for colouring.

This is a close up of the wax slug. It stays together until impact.
