Okay, I figure I should do at least *some* sort of unscientific comparison for Popcan, seeing how he is hunting grouse in grizzly infested areas with only a 20 guage, and, as we all know, there are bears waiting behind every tree and bush, waiting to POUNCE!!!

Here's the test- Dry phone books. Why dry, and not wet, you ask?

Wet newspaper makes nice wound channels, and is probbaly the closest we can get to emulating soft tssue without actually shooting soft tissue. And I don't have the time or room to set up baistic gelatin tests! :D

Dry paper, ont he other hand, really stresses a bullet. Think hard, eavy bone like that of a shoulder, leg, pelvis or spine on a bear. If something is goign to go wrong with your projectile when it hits somethign hard, you;ll find it with dry paper. :D

20 gu slugs

WInchester sabot- 5" penetration
Federal Foster stye- 5" penetration

12gu
WInchester Super X Foster slug- 7" penetration much bigger hole.

FOr comparison, I shot:

375H&H
300 gr Hornady Interlock
2200FPS (mild load)

16" penetration-218 gr

30-06
150gr Hornady INterlock
2600 fps
15" penetration- 94gr

Both bullets looked pretty good, especially the 375 H&H.

The slugs were mangled beyond much recognition.

Brennekes would have done better, but I didn't have any in 20 guage.

Range 20 yards- Abotu where you would shoot a bear if it was coming at you or acting aggresively.

THe 12 made a much bigger wound channel than the 20. The sabot 20 wound channel wasn't very large, either.

Once more I conclude "I would prefer a rifle for bear defense but shotguns are often very handy and portable." :D

:!:

Thanks GH!

I'll feel soooo much better in those "grizzly infested woods" now!

Maybe next spring I'll get you to take me out to your backyard for a blackie,

.... but I'll bring the .308 Steyr .... never mind all this slug nonsense!

Just because there is such a high demand for this sort of laboratory controlled, highly scrutinized testing, I went back outside and to compare with that fabled killer, the destroyer of al things great and small, the one the only ....

Double O buckshot...That's right, 3" of OO pellets, ready to maim and destroy.

I moved closer this time, since I actualy wanted more than 2 r 3 pellets to hit the target. SO at 15 yards I blasted at the same target, about 8 1/2 x 11.

I got 4 pellets on target hooray! :D

They penetrated 1-2.75".

THe rest of the pellets, which hit the paper but not the target, all did the same. :D

hard to believe a 150 gr. 30 cal will penetrate the same as a 300 gr. 375  :D

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

But the differnce in damage- the "wound channel" is impressive. Teh 375 H&H made HUGE damage, compared to the 30-06.

Inerestingly, the 30-06 lost a bit over a third of it's weight, and the 375 lost just less than a third.

I'm closing a deal on REM 1100 FW 20 GA.Would a 20 GA.with a slug barrel(If theres one available) and quality slugs be potent enough for whitetails? This 1100 is only chambered in 2 and 3/4 in.

I don't see why not. Maybe this is a question that Bigredd or one of the regular suggers shoud answer.

welllllll, the Elite is good, but....
I'll settle for a side by side 12ga

Me too, but a sxs is a bird gun, not a bear gun :?

I would disagree there, to an extent. While I wouldn't plan on using one as a bear gun, I would rather have one as a bear gun. That said, a little work, 1/4 rib, and nice front site, and two slugs, and I would be very happy.
