Okay, I figure I should do at least *some* sort of unscientific comparison for Popcan, seeing how he is hunting grouse in grizzly infested areas with only a 20 guage, and, as we all know, there are bears waiting behind every tree and bush, waiting to POUNCE!!!
Here's the test- Dry phone books. Why dry, and not wet, you ask?
Wet newspaper makes nice wound channels, and is probbaly the closest we can get to emulating soft tssue without actually shooting soft tissue. And I don't have the time or room to set up baistic gelatin tests!
Dry paper, ont he other hand, really stresses a bullet. Think hard, eavy bone like that of a shoulder, leg, pelvis or spine on a bear. If something is goign to go wrong with your projectile when it hits somethign hard, you;ll find it with dry paper.
20 gu slugs
WInchester sabot- 5" penetration
Federal Foster stye- 5" penetration
12gu
WInchester Super X Foster slug- 7" penetration much bigger hole.
FOr comparison, I shot:
375H&H
300 gr Hornady Interlock
2200FPS (mild load)
16" penetration-218 gr
30-06
150gr Hornady INterlock
2600 fps
15" penetration- 94gr
Both bullets looked pretty good, especially the 375 H&H.
The slugs were mangled beyond much recognition.
Brennekes would have done better, but I didn't have any in 20 guage.
Range 20 yards- Abotu where you would shoot a bear if it was coming at you or acting aggresively.
THe 12 made a much bigger wound channel than the 20. The sabot 20 wound channel wasn't very large, either.
Once more I conclude "I would prefer a rifle for bear defense but shotguns are often very handy and portable."
