Would an h&r sb2 frame be strong enough for 600 nitro express?
A custom barrel for sure, and it could still be cut to Sami 20 guage rifled chamber spec, so it would still be considered a shotgun, where rifled shotguns are considered such, but it could fire 900 grain bullets?
Probably need massive muzzle break, like you see on a fifty cal.
Just a thought that has been bouncing around my head, not like I have the money or skill to make it happen.
But a guy can dream.

@bdft that is why I was asking about the sb2 frame, and not using the 20 guage barrel, but a custom Natalie designed for the pressure of a 600 ne. The one they use for 45-70, and others, and is used for some of the lighter 12 guage from hell builds. I think they take that up to 25 kpsi
I will look up that thing by Ellis brown

There was a guy here hunting cape buffalo with a 577 on a 12ga sb2 frame. He shot cast bullets. I cant remember the exact details or the members handle but it was posted in the hunting forums a few years ago

Was the 600 nitro not trademarked or proprietary so that others couldnt chamber it or was that the 700 nitro? I maybe wrong but i thought holland n holland held the rights to it.

A quick google tells me 600NE is from 1899, and 700NE is from 1988. The former is definitely not patent protected by now, I don't think the latter would be either? Google tells me patents only last 20 years in Canada, as well as the UK (I am far from an expert in Patent law though)?

If that were so, this would still work, a 600 nitro would still fit in a 20 guage chamber, perhaps have to widen the rim groove.
In a shotgun set up to handle all a 600 would do, it would fire form on the first shot, and then you would have a .62 caliber wildcat brass. I expect in a 2 3/4 chamber the force cone would act as a shoulder for the 3” brass.
I would not likely fire it full nitro load, but perhaps 12 guage slug level with a one and a half oz bullet.
Would just be cool to know it could if it could.

Well - The rifle cartridge will generate more than 3 times the rearward thrust that the shotgun was designed for. Installing a new barrel with not change this situation. OP - Let us know how you feel about this?
BTW - Both shotgun and rifle cartridge headspace on the rim, so no need for a shoulder.

To the question of rearward thrust, that is why I was asking about sb2, which is designed for rifle loads, like 45-70 or .444, but the question I was wondering is is the frame strong enough for a 600 NE. The sb1 is only suitable for shotgun and some pistol caliber, but the sb2 is used for al sorts of rifle caliber.
For the shoulder, I was not thinking of it for head-spacing, but for keeping the mouth of the case from being overworked from fitting to the bullet to being blown out to the full width of a 20 guage chamber.

It doesn't really matter. I believe that .600 NE would be prohibited by energy as it exceeds the 10000J benchmark.

It was just that holland n holland had ceased production of it. My memory was foggy. They refused to build one and then built a 700nitro. They are again building the 600s. Sorry for the derail

That bore of .62 is notable. Many howdah pistols and rifles of built middle 1800s during the British rule of India, these were starting point calibers as emergency arms for tiger hunting. (62-65 bore) And to a lesser extent .75 caliber.
