So, I was given this old Stevens hinge action single. After starting the cleanup with the barrel sitting in the cradle on the butler, decided to drop a 2 3/4" cartridge into the barrel.dropped in nice but 1/4" sticking out! 2 1/2" chamber ..... darn! Anybody know if and where the chamber can be extended to accept 2 3/4" ammo. Not interested in going 3" that would be pushing things too far. Any suggestions appreciated.

Simply opening it up with a long forcing cone reamer would do it... I think most smiths would charge $50 to do that... it reduces pressure slightly... so it wouldn't hurt if it ran a little deep... mailing to and back would probably cost the same... something to consider.

If you've got a quarter inch of shot shell sticking out, that would be a 2 1/4in chamber or maybe a 2 in chamber.

That's if you dropped an unfired shot shell into the chamber.

Shotgun chambers are cut so the fold over portion on the face have a place to open up fully in, without impeding the flow of the shot cup.

Guntech is correct and it's the easiest/cheapest option.

Not all smiths have the proper forcing cone reamers

Some serious trap shooters and hunters will have the cone cut to completely remove the portion of the chamber that is holding back the case you inserted.

It's actually a very good fix for a lot of issues IMHO.

Thanks to all for the information. I wondered about the clearance for the cartridge once it was fired. It is an old Steven's, I see an "N" and a 3 digit number on the part that attaches to the stock. Wonder if it would be safe to extend the chamber to accept 2 3/4

There really is no evidence it wouldn't work.

Have it altered. Then take a 3 inch magnum shell, load it. Tie it to something and fire it remotely. If it doesn't blow up repeat it a couple more times... if it is still good continue using it with 2 and 3/4 inch loads.

Thank you! I should probably mic the outside of the barrel in a few places to check for bulging/ distortion?
