20 inch AR15 1:9 Pencil Barrel, Available?

I have a pretty close to correct AR15 in the original A1 style.

I love the rifle in its original configuration. Light, balanced and very accurate for a semi auto battle rifle.

The only thing I want to swap out on her is the barrel. I currently have a full 20" government profile barrel on her in 1:9

Is there such a thing as a 1:9 20" pencil barrel? More specific, is there such a thing as this barrel in Canada?

What are my options?

Any help from the nutz would be appreciated, thanks.
 
I have a colt SP1 with a 20'' pencil barrel but its a 1/12 twist , that twist actually works better for 55 grain ammo than any twist, there's a good reason lots of .223 varmint rifles have that twist , but if you want to go up to 62 grains and shoot out to 500+ yards it wont work well . But really you wont be shooting really long range with a pencil barrel anyway so you wont need to shoot heavy bullets .. I say within 300 yards shooting a 20'' pencil barrel in 1/12 with 55gr ammo is the way to go. You might be able to find a SP1 barrel on the EE or im sure someone who wants to trade a pencil barrel for yours .

My 20" is a 1:9 but gov profile.

I mostly shoot 62gr.

I know most pencil barrels available are 1:12 and were designed for the original service cartridge of 55gr

I understand that the performance of the 62gr projectile in a 1:12 barrel is supposed to be reduced, but has anyone had any experience with this? Say shooting standard 62gr out of their SP1?

How drastic is the difference? I just shoot holes in paper at no further than 200-300 meters, so I'm not concerned with Army PAMs stats on terminal effects etc. Are we talking groups opening up from 2 MOA at 100 meters with 55gr to like 12 inch groups as an example? Or is it much less drastic?

Any actual experienced insight into how 62gr in a 1:12 compares to 55gr in a 1:12 would be appreciated.

I may just sell my AR15 and pick up one of the minty Colt SP1's that people are dumping on the EE more and more frequently lol
 
DPMS released one like you want this year. if you look in the retro AR section of AR fifteen dot com there are pics and a statement from DPMS. Any of the sponsors here who deal with DPMS can probably get you one.

I found the item on the site, even comes with the gas block for $179!!

Who in Canada deals with DPMS or would have one? Forgive my ignorance, I know nothing about dealers or who carries what brands etc etc.

Google finds me nothing in Canada :(
 
I have a Colt 20" pencil barrel upper (1:12") and it is really fun to shoot with the weight being so much less than many uppers I've shot. I use a heavy upper for service comp but for fun the pencil barrel is great.

Have you fired anything heavier than 55gr through it Sir?

How did you find the accuracy using higher grain projectiles ie 62gr if you have any experience? I'm curious as to how much deviation it would cause.
