If I wanted to shoot sub MOA out to 500 and 1000 yds (I don't have that skill yet, but if the shooter were ok), would the 24" over the 20" be a significant factor?

I'm contemplating the 308, and the 6.5 Creedmoor. From what I've gathered the 6.5 is a better choice for LONG range shooting. Is this an accurate assessment?

Thanks!

6.5 is definitely more suitable for long range shooting as it is not as affected by wind drift and it doesn't drop near as quickly as the .308. I've heard of guys shooting short barreled Creedmoor's well but most creedmoor's are longer barrels (24" +) to get the most velocity out of the round. In theory... Longer barrel = higher velocity = Less bullet drop over distance.

There is likely a point where the barrel can get too long for a certain load and begin slowing down as well. Also, barrel length can be limited by personal preference or practicality, ie: Do you want to carry a 28" barrel around hunting in the mountains? Unlikely. Short barrels are much more practical for this as they are lighter than longer barrels in the same contour.

24" would give you about another 100 fps. Not a big deal, but more is better. Also give more RPM to the bullet, handy if you are shooting long bullets - which you would be at long range.

A 20" tube is stiffer.

My target barrels are 30" to 32". My 260AI is similar to the Creedmoor and launcehs the 140s at about 3,000fps.

I've been playing around a fair amount over the summer with RPR's and 24" is a great OAL for a barrel both the 6.5x47 lapua and the creedmoor have excellent ballistics and a 24" is the right length imo for long ranges.

I was pretty sure that was going to be my answer, and much appreciate the input guys.

Have been a couple RPR for sale, but with 20" bbls. Looks like I'll have to save my beer money and buy new, or get lucky at some point!

Factory RPR's come in .308 with a 20" barrel and the 6.5 Creedmoor's come with a 24" barrel. There's no option. You wouldn't be able to get a 20" 6.5 barrel for the RPR unless you get a custom one put on.
