When you think about barrel length vs powder consumption, the diameter of the barrel is an important consideration. Barrel volume is the key, rather than barrel length. Thus medium and large bores consume an equal amount of powder in a shorter barrel length than do small bores. At .73 caliber, a 12 gauge is decidedly a large bore, and the powder is consumed in a relatively short distance from the chamber. Having said that, I chronograhed a number of brands of 12 ga slugs from my 20" 590, and few lived up to their advertised velocity. Pick the brand of slug that you prefer, sight in your gun accordingly, and go hunting.
