Well following in ATR's footsteps I also went out Deer hunting with a 50 BMG rifle and 750 grain HPBT hunting ammo. After setting up on a hill and ranging everything around, I found a spot that was 750m into the edge of a nice valley. Teaming with all kinds of white tails I set upon my perch and waited.

Wednesday 30 Nov 05 at 0836hrs.. a shot rang out :D and at 710m a not bad white tail buck fell victim to a 50BMG round. Bellow are the pictures.

Shot was placed just infront of the hind legs at the spine.

Makes me wonder if the deer ever heard the shot after the impact of the bullet and how long the lag was, That is a nice rifle, kinda makes the world a little smaller for ya. Decent whitey too, congrats

Define "valley" ;)

I'd be interested in seeing the deer skinned, not that I'm some kind of weirdo that likes gore, but I'm curious of the validity of "myths" I was told in my army day in regards to 50 BMG impacts or near misses on critters.

INCOMING!!!

One of these days I'm gonna have to try a 50!!! But..., here in N.B. the shots are so close, I think there might not be anything left of the deer!

We need pics of the wound!

Cheers and Congrats!
Jay

Well... to answer a few questions... 1st the valley is behind, had to move it to a good place for cleaning and to take pictures. We were on a little plateau near the top. 2nd, when the deer was hit it was actually a second shot as the first one just went over the back. It did not even move. It looked around a little and I touched off the second shot. When it was hit it just went down. Here is a picture of were it was hit:

It was a spinal shot just infront of the hind quarters. It did not do that much damage. Unfortunatly it did not die right away and needed a 30-06 at close range to finish it. BTW a 30-06 did more damage than the 50 BMG did. I will get some skinned deer pics and post them later.

I am sure glad I am not the only 1 out there killing Bambi with a 50. Nice going!!!
I think we should call those dip####s at Mythbusters to maybe help disspell some of the BS surrounding the 50s.
If your shot had been just slightly forward, I am certain no final small caliber kill shot would have been required. Both my deer this year were dead before I go to them.
Now all we need to do is get the deer to find bigger valleys with good backstops , to live in. That way we can REALLY see what can be done with this humble OLD non magnum cartridge.
Congrats again, nice deer.

Well for the ones that wanted to know here are some autopsy photo's (sort of :D ).

50BMG entrance wound, the size of your finger. Some 2 1/2- 3 inches of bruising around the area.

Exit wound on other side. 2 inch hole + 2-4 inches of bruising around hole.

And the 30-06 exit wound..... Just messy... exited on the front shoulder. Approx. 6-8 inches of messed up meat.

As ATR stated, if it was about 12 inches toward the front and 6 inches down it would have been a different story. Bullet takes a little time to get there so a little deer movement is expected. Overall I was suprised at the difficulty of the shot, having taken into consideration your backstop, distance, other hunters, etc... I do recommend extreme caution when hunting at long range and always be aware of your suroundings.

Thanks for the pic's. Certainly not the mess some would have you believe, like shooting fat squirrels with a 22 swift. Heck I've seen 243's damage more meat on deer.

Well Im glad you guys are disposing the myth that the only thing a .50 BMG is good for is downing 747s
You really could use your long range skills here in Southern Sask.:D

Good stuff!!

Thats becuase theydie of old age before you get to them.

There is something that is just not right about that? But I would sure like to give it a go. That just sounds like to much fun, congrats on a great sask whitetail.
