Well I thing we've got a problem here
Her voice doesn't sound right
But I left myself on the answering machine
Said "I'm back in town tonight."
I feel I've stepped out of the wilderness
All squint-eyed and confused
But even babies raised by wolves
They know exactly when they've been used....
etc etc...
Love that tune!
We just got back from hunting our first time in WMU 25. What a place!! Tough terrain to say the least!!
At any rate, there's only a couple roads going in there from Hearst, one of which was closed due to logging. Soooo.....that left us, and about 60-100 other hunters in one area! End of Fushimi Lake Rd. Everyone was set up when we got there! (Nonetheless, we met some great people and fellow hunters!!) If any other CGN'ers were there....it was great to share camp with you!! And thanks again for the tomato's and Grappa!!!
It was cold and raining the whole week. Very, very little fresh sign, and hardly any water due to an extremely dry year. By day 4, I'd have to say morale was getting a little low. Nobody in the camp had anything hanging, and there were definately some "disgruntled" fellows.
One of our guys Bill, would go out and call every night. Tuesday morning, Bill runs into the camp bus saying that there's fresh bull tracks right by the camp. A bull had come around that night answering to the cow calls.
I, with my gynormous hangover, jump from the bunk and gear up. (Hey, if there's fresh sign, we gotta go for it, right?!)
The other's decide to be lazy and stay in bed.
We set up in some viable area where we suspected the bull to be hanging out. At about 10:30, shots rang from my buddies' .300win mag. I was only about 200 yards away at the time, so I got really excited awaiting the wounded animal to run in front of me for the finisher!
2 minutes later my buddy Bill calls me on the radio telling me to get there ASAP! He was shot at 80 yards out in a dried up swamp. A second shot was taken as he ran off. (He made it about 30-40 yards and fell)
We waited 45min-1hr and went to get him. (In the meantime I went back to camp and got all the pi$$tanks out of bed!)
The moose, a young bull about a year and a half weighed approx 600-700 lbs. Not huge one, but a great eater! We had the tenderloins that night, and they were superb, to say the least!!
All in all, the trip was a success. We'd hoped to bring 2 back, but considering only us and one other gang, took moose out the first week, I'm really proud of the dedication, efforts and hard work of my team!
I'm hoping all you CGN'ers are successful in this years hunt(s). I can't wait to hear the stories!!
Here's a pic for your viewing enjoyment!
