I didn't end up going to Nipigon this year. The rest of the boys are up there right now and I'm sitting in my hotel room in Timmins, working. My wife and I and the kids moved to Sudbury a month ago so that kind of buggered up my holidays for this year. I did manage to negotiate a week of vacation in November. We'll be going to Big Buck Island with my Dad and the rest of the crew in 13 days. I can hardly wait for that.

I ended up moose hunting with my old gang near Sudbury for the opening weekend. We only had calf tags and we didn't see much in the way of sign. Everything we saw was old. The weather was too warm but we still hunted. I saw a few birds. I ended up going for a ride on my 4-wheeler on Saturday afternoon with my IZH-94 Over and Under 12 Guage / 30-06 and got my limit in Ruffed Grouse. I could have taken more but 5 was enough. I never cut a single moose track in all the miles of logging roads that I drove. We used to see a dozen moose on opening weekend. I don't know what happened. Perhaps the cancellation of the Spring Bear Hunt has put a dent in the calf population.

I got 3 days of exercise and I got to carry my new CZ 550 with me (in 9.3 x 62mm by the way) so that was fun. We went fishing for some Northern Pike on Sunday after lunch and I deboned them and we had a fish and partridge fry for our Thanksgiving Dinner "Surf & Turf". It was fun to get together with the boys again. I hadn't hunted with these guys in over 5 years. On Monday morning we decided to do a push on one of the peninsulas on the lake. I knew that it was going to be warm so I just wore my long underwear tops with an orange vest and a light pair of pants. I was quite warm and perspiring heavily when I finished the push but I had to laugh at my friend and is dad who were wearing their big hunting coats. My friend was wearing a large backpack and was actually shaking when he came out of the bush. I thought he was going to collapse from hear exhaustion. When I was driving home, I had my CZ on the front seat and I noticed 6 cars pulled off the side of the road and there was about 7 or 8 people standing outside of their vehicles with cameras up. I looked and saw a medium sized black bear standing about 40 yards from them in the grass. I had a bear tag in my pocket but didn't think it would do much for our sport if I bailed out and blasted that bear, so I just kept on trucking. I did have to laugh at the idea of actually shooting it in front of everyone though. A younger me would have. I'll wait and deflower my new rifle in a couple of weeks on a nice whitetail deer.

(Please note that any photos where we are drinking beer were taken after we were finished hunting for the day. We do not drink when we are hunting.)

I figured a write up of your hunt was coming, our hunt was slow but we ended up getting a big cow in the middle of the week. Nice rifle and area, good luck on your up coming hunt.
