2009-2010 BC regulations on line now

nothing like keeping it simple. why are they shutting down for 10 days in november? why not just leave the 4 point season open straight through?

Because mule deer during the rut are like a 16 year old boy at a party. All caution is thrown to the wind as they chase a bit of tail!

and 4 points need to be protected during this time because??? is breeding success that low that this can be justified?

the bucks are already protected by terrain, timber, and darkness.

has there been any thought to a possible chain reaction of increased pressure in other areas for muley and whitetail during nov 10-20?

That's just the point. During the rut the young bucks forget all that and run around as if they own the world. When you shoot off the majority
of the young deer they don't grow old enough to mature into 4+ points.

I agree with the rut closure for all bucks but I don't agree with the reduction to only 1 buck total for the season. The deer herds are in good shape here and in my opinion all that is needed is a bit of protection during the peak rut. I also think there should be a general open doe season in order to lower the total herd sizes in order to fine-tune the buck-doe ratio.

doesn't matter how dumb they are, nothing changes the fact that it is dark for 14+ hours a day at that time of the year.

also, my original question was why close the 4 point season during that time? what is gained by closing the season to all buck harvest during the peak of the rut?

also, i don't understand how you can be in favour of a 2 buck limit, but not hunting 4 points at least during nov 1-20. if you shot 2 bucks in say september, how is this better than if you shot 1 and i shot 1 during mid november? if the buck/doe ratio is out of whack, won't a 2 buck limit distort if further?

please keep in mind that i know nothing of region 5

Fair question but the truth is that even with a 2 buck limit - one any-buck and one 4 point in split seasons - most casual mule deer hunters will go home empty handed if the season is closed during the rut. When they opened up to any buck during the rut a few years ago guys who hadn't shot a deer in 20 years were suddenly "experts" who were whacking forkhorns as they ran around in circles.
