Here's our schedule for the last bit of 2009. We will be shooting basically on the second Sunday of every month. There will be factory, custom factory and custom gun classes, 10 relays/class. All shooting off the bench. Free lunch included with entry. All longer range shooting depends on how much snow there is.

Jan 11 100/200
Feb 8 100/200
March 8 100/200/300?/500?
April 12 100/200/300/500
May 10 100/200/300/500
June 14 100/200/300/500
Sept 13 100/200/300/500
Oct 11 100/200/300/500?
Nov 8 100/200/300?/500?
Dec 13 Turkey Shoot 100/200 yd

We shoot a variety of targets, from 5 shot groups, Hunter Bench score targets, 1 shot cold gun for center or specific position, flies, crows, grouse, Black Death, typewriter keys, dart board, 5 shots on marmot targets @ 200, 300 & 500 yds, for score and group. We'll shoot some of the 100/200 yd targets @ 300 & 500 as well. We shoot eggs @ 300 yds + depending on how bad the wind is. We'll be trying some 5 shot groups at 600yds as well this year.

The idea is to have a fun match with not much seriousness, try to get new shooters interested and make some revenue for the club. There's usually 8+ guys showing up. Bring your 110v electric heater, there's power at each bench plus a warm up room.

The shoots are open to anyone.

Everything is subject to change.

For more info and confirmation of shoot, go to the Campbell River Gun Club's website and under Event Calendar / Fullbore section, my contact info is there, or PM me.

Good Shooting
Greg

Butts are were the people hang out that mark your target.
Concrete walls and roof protects the target crew.

Nokomis Butts... cantilever style

Sacramento's butts... straight up and down on sliders, with a counter weight of concrete

The third type is the counter weight targets, one of the two targets is always up.
Instead of the concrete counter weight, you have another target frame.
Palomino range at the old CFB Calgary were 2 frame targets on a chain and gears.
Behind any of these target systems is a 30 foot or more dirt berm that stops the bullets.

IMO, Sac has it right, you get more targets in for less money and you can raise them up halfway and they stay there. They slide really easy on the PVC that attaches to the target frame (with a little diesel sprayed) on the greased upright poles. Two guys to a frame with the ones like Sac has and you can have the target down, bullet hole indicated, old hole patched, the marker moved to the score value and backup in under 3 sec.

For those that have never been to a long range match, here a video the APRA did a few yrs back that explains how the matches run and show the butts there too.

This is sharp contrast to benchrest, seen here at a HBR match in Billings

Nope, we don't have butts. We don't shoot military style shoots. Right now we shoot benchrest 10 times/yr and one 600yd VISL belly shoot. At 600 yds we have some wooden framework for putting targets on. At 500, 400, 300 and 200 yds we stand up pallets side by side and cover them with cardboard. Staple our benchrest targets to the cardboard. 100yds we have portable wooden target stands that we staple cardboard to, then targets. We're hoping to start a Service Rifle Section in the Club, so maybe we'll have butts one day.
Cheers

The only ranges in BC that are a) 600 yds or greater and B) have butts/retractable scoring frames are military.

We have a thriving F-Class ("Belly Benchrest") and TR sport in BC but no private/public ranges with the facilities to hold those events with facilities longer than 300M. We are at the mercy of every reserve unit and Olympic security person for range time... it would be nice to open up the field a bit!

What can we do to encourage/help/persuade/bribe you guys to putting in butts and starting to host TR and F-CLass matches?? You BR guys would kick serious butt in F-Class and I'm sure that your coffers would ultimately benefit from hosting these sorts of matches!

Would we need butts if we had video feed from the 500 and 600 yd targets?
I'm just getting all the pieces together for a wireless video target viewing system. We're gonna try it this weekend for field of view, clarity, etc. Cost should come in under $400 for the system.
cheers

ICFRA
10 Targets
....
10.2. Electronic or other remote marking and scoring systems which have been approved by the host Association or Federation for use in their National Championship competition, may be used. Otherwise, all shots will be marked from the butts.

This would indicate that you can if it is approved. I would suggest any form of butts is best. All butts I have seen have a concrete slab on top to protect the crew. It hangs out about 1-2 feet over the concrete wall.

A second berm for the crew to hide behind way off to the side of the frames could be used with radios to save some time but once a competitor calls for a new center, you would have to stop everyone from shooting and clear everyone's rifles (flag in or bolt out) before the crew exposes themselves. Trouble comes on 2+15s or 20s if you don't have butts since the target gets too cluttered and makes for a very very long day.

This is why butts exist, so the crew is right there and no stoppage of shooting happens if a target needs repair or a new center.
