Picked up the new regs for this year and was surprised to see that they've cancelled the 2nd (antlerless) deer tag for most of southern and western Manitoba. Are deer herds down that much? I was under the impression that the western part f the province was overrun. I used to hunt in the Melitta area and there never seemed to be any shortage, farmers were literally begging you to hunt their land.

That's surprising. I have seen a lot of deer this year in a lot of areas. North of Winnipeg and South. Haven't been West yet.

Is there Sunday hunting yet?

That sucks. I really appreciated the opportunity to get a 2nd deer in either muzzle or centrefire. Shortage of deer? Really? Do they still have the 3rd deer area? I'll have to see if I can download the 2009 guide.

this is bull####! anyone here why they would do such a thing? deer numbers aren't down at all, certainly not where i hunt. i kinda have a hard time beleiveing they are doing to save them for the metis, but dumber things have happened.

Deer numbers have been dropping of for at least a decade in the West Man. area we hunt. I saw nine deer in four days hunting last fall. A decade ago I would have seen forty deer in four days without trying too hard and generally took a nice four pointer or better home. Ton's of coyote, land use changes, and severe winters may be to blame. Heavy treaty hunting beginning in mid summer also cleans a lot out.

The changes don't really affect me much as I hunt east but, as GrizzlyPeg was wondering about other 2nd and 3rd deer zones how many other hunters will research the same thing. I know of several large groups that hunt the southwest part of the province; if they all start heading to the eastern part of the province the pressure on the deer will be intense. I already noticed a larger number of hunters in the Whiteshell last fall. Gas prices, economy were already keeping a lot of guys closer to home.

I just got back from turkey hunting in the Pembina river valley and saw more deer than during any previous turkey hunt in the last 15 years. And despite the cold winter, they all looked in great shape.
