I was tinkering around with the rear sight on my Polytech and noticed that when I was adjusting the windage to the left, the windage screw got loose. So I tightened it up, and I now find the windage and elevation knobs rather stiff (but with very positive clicks). Is this normal?
 
While I can't comment on your specific situation, I can say that you cannot trust Norinco/Polytech iron sights for repeatability etc., Many people have replaced them with US parts if they can get them.

On three separate occasions, at three separate dealers I was showing my nephews potential first/entry level service rifles in which they can get into shooting with, and everytime there was a front sight/rear sight issue (or both). I'm sure these issues have been discussed ad nauseum in the battle rifle forums.

It'd be nice if someone sold a Norinco either with US sights, or guarantee repeatable rear sights, and a "true" vertical front sight. I'd certainly pay extra for it!

Normal - Junk sights. Either to loose or to tight.

I have never been able to find a set of chinese sights that work well no matter how much I've tweaked them. Im lucky when I do permanent windage at the front blade and get the elevation knob to work reliably. To do so usually makes the windage knob to tight to turn by hand.

Find some G.I or Garand sights. E-Bay is the cheapest source.

My M14s rear sight fell apart right out of the box. I gave it a similar treatment as Kurgan (complete disassembly, degrease, blue loctite, tighten the screw HARD) and it has now withstood close to 2000 rounds with excellent results. I routinely crank it between 100-300m and am very happy with the performance. I worked over a friends gun in the same way.

After purchasing the post war M1 Garand sight, I fixed my factory sight. :p All it needed was a thorough degreasing, a dab of blue loctite on the windage screw, a good snugging of the windage screw, and then I backed off on the windage screw just a tad. Let it dry over night -- and Bob's your uncle! It seems to work perfectly now. It has optimal tension for both windage and elevation. However, I still feel more confident with the Garand knobs, as they will give me the necessary "repeatability".

Swap that whole chinese crap assembly out and put the garand sight in. The norc sight assembly is crap.

Speaking of which I still have the Norc assembly on my M305...ugh too many projects too little money.
 
The Norc sights can be hit or miss especially the sights from the 2002 to 2003 batches. Many of you out there have scoped your M14's so that the iron sight issue is a moot point (non-starter). The goofy sights are/will be a great backup to your scoped sights.

I've learned that some / many of the newer 2009 Poly / Norc sights seem to be working as planned, that's a good thing. I just replaced my 2007 Norc sights and gave them away. Now with a set of M1 Garand sights, I am good to go! :D

I read Hungry's review of the 2009 Polytech M14S and following posts before purchasing mine, and recall the consensus being that a majority of Poly sights were working fine, as opposed to the great deal of luck required to get a good working Norc one.

My Poly seems to have gotten good sights, and if there's any issue with the indexing (another common problem on Norcs and Poly's) it doesn't show in my groups that are still on centre of POA at both 100 and 200m. In contrast I have an older Norc that not only doesn't click when adjusted, but requires being dialed way over to one side and high just to hit centre at 100m. The combination of poor sights and bad indexing is probably the most annoying shortcoming of the M305 platform for me, as I'd prefer to use irons at least until I can access a quality scope mount.

I totally over-paid for mine. However, the rear sight on my '09 Poly kept coming loose after a few adjustments, and it got annoying having to constantly tighten it with a screwdriver on the range. The M1 sight works perfectly.
