I got back two weeks ago from two weeks in South Africa. Besides shooting the African Compak and Sporting Championship, I shot nearly 500 pigeons and doves on the following Monday with several of the best Brit and World shooters. George Digweed and John Pool were amusing themselves shooting 80 yard birds while I managed to shoot a few overhead of Tony Manvell some 50 plus yards away. A threesome of Italians shot 1709 birds. All birds were retrieved by the locals who also policed up our shooting areas.

My friend Robert took me to the Botswana border to hunt 2 days on a 2,000 Km sq farm. I nearly shot a wolrd class Impala but the guide was in front of the muzzle. Late on Friday, just before dark at 6.35 PM, I shot htis Blue Wildebeest from around 130M according to Robert. One shot went through the lungs and took out the heart. I was low in a small bush. Robert had to make sure that it was a male as even the females have big horns. It barely made 50 feet before dropping. I donated the meat and skin to the two local guides.

I used Robert's wife Steyer in 30-06 with a Hornady 180 bullet which was recovered under the left shoulder. I will take a picture of it later and post it.

You can view more pictures of the hunt and South Africa in my website under the STOREFRONT:

There are some neat pictures of lions at a large lion park near Joburg.

Prices for South African residents are dirt cheap compared to what the outfitters charge to Americans. Typicaly, they charge $500US per day plus a $750 pro hunter fee (guide) and a trophy fee. I can tell you that I paid 1/4 of that! I paid the South African price! I will be back next year a little later in March or early April. Besides Impalas, Redbuck, Wildebeest both Black and Blue (GNU), I also saw Elands, a lionness (at less than 50 yards) and something Robert has never seen, a male Leopard at 20 yards during the day! We were walking up a dry river in the sand downwind from him. We spooked him sleeping under some brush. I had him in my sites! But, you need a permit from Switzerland for a lion or leopard!

Regards,
Henry;)

P.S. As per the site rules, no hotlinking to non-supporting dealers, so I inserted a space between the w w w...
