...and just as it was years ago. We still all had fun.
Last season I didn't really notice less deer (East Selkirk and Minnedosa) and with the great winter they had I hope there will be lots.
Would have been nice to know about the change before the big game draw dates had to be entered. I would have put in to get an Elk tag for this year cause i will have time and freezer space.

Manitoba Conservation couldn't manage an orgy in a whore house. Piss poor managent of herds in the past and now the sky is falling! Hopefully the numbers will rebound but this didn't happen overnight and unless they address deer harvests on a zone by zone basis like other provinces, a couple of bad winters will decimate the deer herds.

Manitoba Conservation IMO has always been reactive instead of proactive. If our province wide deer numbers are in fact down significantly, as they are in unit 30 where I have hunted for the past 28 seasons, then restrictions of this nature are much better than an all out closure. I lived through the closure of the early 1970's which in my opinion was not necessary and did nothing but discourage a lot of hunters.
Winters are the most crucial and determining factor on deer numbers in this part of the world. This coupled with other less severe influences can either result in a drastic increase, decrease or stable whitetail populations. As Big Game stated a management strategy on a unit by unit basis would be the best scenario. Don't have to look far. Check out State of Minnesota's whitetail seasons and management policy.
Sadly, the aforementioned takes a lot of money, personnel, research, etc... which Manitoba Conservation does not have. In fact, budgets are shrinking as our current Provincial Government scrambles to keep their never ending show together. This fall I'll be happy harvesting one deer. Hoping too that the next few winters to the future are on the mild side so as our deer herd can recover somewhat. I just wish all the resource users played by the same rules though.

In more than one GHA I saw 40+ deer in one day of hunting. Two particular days there were 80+. In my main hunting area the deer were "hiding" during the rifle season. But not in archery and muzzleloader. Both of which I do. Just because the MNR didn't get off their lazy asses and check for themselves. They are taking the word of the majority of "lazy" hunters that didn't see any deer during rifle season. We had a dry year and deer will head to the water when that happens. I'm guessing most hunters didn't stray far from their "tried, tested, and true" deer stands. This year I have already gotten a bunch of very HEALTHY deer on my trail cams. As well as cams, initial scouting has shown that numbers in a couple of GHA's that I hunt the numbers have stayed the same of actually increased.
NDP are a joke. And Manitobans are a joke for continuously voting for them.
And they suck for not putting this out officially sooner.

Surprised that we only get one now in 33. And get to shoot a buck, now?(that's been a while) And have our "early" season cut back to 1 week.

IMO Manitoba voters should look west to Saskatchewan for assistance.I just wish all the resource users played by the same rules though.
If numbers are way down everwhere then excessive harvesting by people with cards definately won't help matters.
I guess I'll have to be selective this year seeing as I hunt all three seasons. I don't fill all my tags but I love to spend time in the woods. Now with just one tag I guess it'll have to be a huge buck before I notch my tag. The danger of waiting too long though is no venison in the freezer!

so can one really blame the coyotes, deer or even MB Conservation? Politics has screwed us. How many deer taken on "harvester cards" that were thrown out to anyone who thinks that maybe they have some Metis heritage? Right to hunt, sure in Safeway or Walmart. If you want to have a harvester card to hunt with then get out the bow and arrow, shoot what you need to live and not for the fun of it. How can anyone manage any deer population when there is no accountability to the system. I know people that shot at least a dozen deer each last year, yet until they had their card, they bought a license like everyone else and hunted in season.
Seriously, I noticed no impact in deer population last season, there are dead deer on the highway every day I go to work. The decrease I did notice last year was fewer clad in orange, more spot lights at night and the only CO spotted was the drive through at Tim Horton's.

Deer numbers in the zone I hunt (Whiteshell) were way down. Every morning and evening I'd hear wolves howling on the ridges. I don't think Metis hunting is as big an issue in the east as the cards aren't recognized in that area. Deer tags were up with a 2nd tag, and seasons were extended by weeks. Wolf predation and overharvest were the main issues, and not just in the past year. Conservation is still issueing a 2nd tag this year even though the herd is devastated. Their reasoning is to bring back moose to the area. Will never happen in a 100 years, deer will still be around with brainworm and the native harvest won't stop. Human greed and modern technology are spelling the end for our wildlife. I've been fortunate enough to hunt through the glory years, now I guess I'll be experiencing some tough times as well.
