2013 GAP Grind

As mentioned above, these matches require a LOT of preparation, and a lot of staff to run them. It's an order of magnitude more work than it is for even a major championship match on a square range with a fixed butts. Each stage needs an RO and a scoring person. Stages need to be run concurrently, juggling shooters between them in order to get everyone through. Plus, all of that steel needs to be hauled out hundreds of yards, set up, then hauled back in again.

Let me throw out a hypothetical situation; Lets say hypothetically there was a place to run a match like this (rifle part only) in Canada.

1) Would you go to it?

2) How far would you be willing to travel to go to it?

3) How much would you be willing to pay for the entry fee?

4) Would you be willing to assist as staff if you were still able to shoot?

1) Yes. (I need to get an appropriate rifle)
2) I'd drive 6-9 hours (that's as far as the nearest American match from SW Ontario).
3) $200-300 seems to be the going rate.
4) Yes. I would suggest a lower match fee for volunteers. It would be quite the logistical trick to pull off (organizing shooters/volunteers), but do-able.

Yes!

2) How far would you be willing to travel to go to it?
Depends on the course of fire, but potentially anywhere in Canada.

3) How much would you be willing to pay for the entry fee?
I am doing a team event in Utah this year, $400 for the team. That answers questions 2 and 3.

4) Would you be willing to assist as staff if you were still able to shoot?
Yes, especially if you split it into two days, shoot one day, work the next.

1) Would you go to it?
Definitely (providing I could get the domestic responsibility and work worlds to align)!

2) How far would you be willing to travel to go to it?
Manitoba through B.C.

3) How much would you be willing to pay for the entry fee?
$400 seems a bit steep but I'd probably part with it anyway, providing travel wasn't terribly prohibitive and COF, location, and attendees were interesting enough

4) Would you be willing to assist as staff if you were still able to shoot?
Again, definitely. These sorts of things can't go off by themselves and I'm the type of guy who enjoys a good experience with other like-minded individuals, even if it means having to watch or organize the majority of it. I'm currently in the process of organizing a few different COF for a select group of local shooters at a private range which will most likely require me to be the RO, scorer, and target b!tch but I'm more than happy to do it if the result is a successful event and the guys come away with a "when are we doing this again?!" expression.

Sounds like the wheels are turning, kombayotch. I'll be watching.........

There are dozens of these shoots in the US every year. I typically travel down and do 2-3 at least. They are great fun and a real challenge. They take a lot of manpower to put on. There are places up in Canada that are capable of doing it, but it's usually the manpower that is lacking.

The wheels have been turning for a few years now. Those matches are the thing I miss most about no longer living south of the border.

Yes, manpower is a big one, but so is finding a venue that allows multiple distances to be shot at from the same firing point. At least that is the case here in Ontario. I'm sure there are places out west that could easily host a match like this.

It would be a multi-day match. The exact CoF would NOT be published prior to the match. That would kind of defeat the purpose of unknown scenarios at unknown distances... lol! The CoF would be designed to make use of the terrain where the match was being held.

Thing I can tell you the match would involve:

-No sighters, every shot fired counts on score. Cold bore stages (don't expect them to be at 100y/m). >> come zeroed!
-No wind flags other the the ones that occur naturally in nature.
-Distances will be random (42, 168, 321, 642, 987, 1103,...), NOT (100, 200, 300, 400, 600...)
-Stages will required engaging targets at multiple distances, sometimes in a certain order, sometimes based on a certain feature (penalties for hitting other targets)
-Every stage will have some kind of stress (time pressure, ranging, position shooting, etc...)
-Stages will test the shooter's knowledge of their cartridge's external ballistics.
-Stages will test the shooter's ability to correct misses under time pressure.
-Some stages (or parts them), will require running the scope at different magnification settings. Could be due to distance, could be due to required FOV... or both.
-Score will be base on both points and execution time for the stage.

Would probably do a side match that would be some kind of pyramid elimination playoff. A match like "Sniper Duel" or something of that nature.

I like it. And yeah, good point about the COF......

What I've initially drafted according to the range footprint and features is not far off from your concept. Keep us posted if you go anywhere with this, please. I see no reason why we couldn't have these types of matches here.
