2013 Nova Scotia Moose Draw

Just got the email from DNR and it's time to start thinking about how and where to go after a moose. I've never had the chance to go on a moose hunt myself but hopefully 2013 will be the year. I'm thinking about applying for Zone 5 as It's the only part of Cape Breton I've ever done any hiking through. Meat Cove would also be a nice place to stay overnight and it's an excuse to get some chowder in Neil's Harbour ha ha.

Being a non-motorized zone will make for an interesting hunt but our crew is pretty young and fit so the carry-out should be manageable. I didn't see too many opportunities for long shots where I passed through so I may be taking my Lee Enfield No. 4 Jungle Carbine conversion. How about you guys?
 
How do you qualiify for the NS moose hunt living in NSW Australia?? .
Per application You are eligible to apply if:

•you are a resident of Nova Scotia
•you have a valid Nova Scotia Wildlife Resources Card
•you are 18 years of age or over
•you have not held a Nova Scotia Moose hunting license within the past five years (2008-2012)
•your hunting privileges are not suspended

It is the most poorly set up draw probally in canada with respect to fairness. Some putting in 30 years and never a tag others putting in for their 4th or 5th
I will save my money for NL thank you

Will do! A couple of my buddies are keen to enter the draw for Zone 5 as well and we're all pretty capable of packing some kilos over country.

I should have mentioned that I'm from Halifax, just living and working in Australia for a while - money is way better here than NS! Last year there was a 1 in 7 chance in zone 5 for Season 4 so we're all going to apply for it and a motorized zone, even though it's pretty much a waste of money but you gotta be in it to win it eh?
 
Hopefully its easier to get a tag there than it is in Ontario, its pretty tough here to get one, unless you go way up into the NW part of the province.
 
Don't see how it is unfair, as far as i can see it's just sh!thouse luck, they even air the draw live. Be prepared to walk, one of our guys walked 32 kms the day we downed our moose. Last year the trip cost 350 each, thats everything, gas, lodging, food, meat cutting. You will not find a more economical moose hunt anywheres unless you can buy an over the counter tag

I'm going to apply, have to do some research about the zones though.

At one point I had considered taking a pack horse into the wilderness area,
but he'd have to be pretty well orange from head to toe!

Just be careful on the while you have to be living here I think it is two months prior but check. Know a friend that was working in Ontario when his name was drawn and had to give back the tag which he did OR they would charge him but cannot recall with what

Check out the pool system they use in NB most get a tag every approx 9 ?? years vs here some 4 tags in 20 years most none. Don't think it is luck but I won't go there
NB is a fair system. NS sucks

Luckily my last place of residence in Canada was NS so I'm still entirely eligible. I checked out the NB moose hunt and it looks like it'd be worth it if I could find someone to guide for me. I'm assuming NB residents are allowed one special guiding permit per year as well? Going to check in with some friends in Miramichi and see if they'd be keen. Thanks guys!
 
Well I applied for the draw here in NS for about 18 years or more. I never got a draw for moose yet.
I think it's just pure luck of the draw. Maybe this year will be my year, but I'm not counting on it.

Cool glad you are ok. I will have to ask my friend what went down, I know he was born here and still had a house here and paid taxes on it but. Lets just say he had the licence in his hand, guide picked and vacation booked then another letter came requesting he return the licence immediately due to him not living there 2 months prior looks like the same requirement today. Licences are issued through a lottery draw process. Only Nova Scotia residents* can apply. The application period occurs annually, each spring. More information is available online at: w ww.gov.ns.ca/natr/draws/moosedraw.

* Nova Scotia Resident = at any time, means a person permanently or ordinarily resident in the Province for the two months immediately preceding that time, and includes:

i.an officer of the diplomatic or consular service of a foreign country stationed within the Province,

ii.a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police or the Canadian Armed Forces stationed or born in the Province,

iii.a person born in the Province and the owner of real property in the Province
