Off to a roaring start.
First one of our party opted to hunt Mule Deer instead for the Archery opener today after spotting a big bruiser last night while scouting and another of our party showed up in pretty rough shape after a late night and only 1 hour of sleep but we managed to pull it off and had a good fun, safe hunt.
We were not able to set up on the "X" as the landowner would not allow hunting due to past issues having had both a cow and a horse of his shot and killed in the past by some irresponsible deer hunters so we took our next best option and set up on an adjacent field owned by a different fellow, put out about 100 decoys and tried to pull the birds the extra distance over to us.
To say it worked well was an understatement. Persistent flagging combined with some hard, long drawn out calling toned down to mellower tones once we had their attention did the trick. For over an hour the sky in all directions had geese trading back and forth from the two main roosts to our location and considering we figured there was maybe 800-1000 geese using the adjacent field between birds coming in, leaving and returning again it seemed like there was 3-4 times the number we had estimated.
At times there were geese in every corner of the sky. They did not come easy but we worked them hard, chose the flocks we wanted to shoot carefully and after about an hour had our 3 man limit of 24 Canada's on the ground.
Afterwards we went to a buffet breakfast, ate way too much, but it was so good and needless to say that led to a major snooze before cleaning our pile of birds.
Can't wait for day 2......
