The SPRA held the annual Driller’s matches this weekend. There was a low turnout, probably because the Western’s 3 days away and the weatherman was calling for rain. Saturday looked like it could rain on us, but we still went to the line. The 8 shooters that showed shot the group/score portion and we were off the line by 10:30 am and never saw a drop of rain. The wind Saturday morning was coming from the west around 3-5 mph at this time. Once the winners were figured out, we went to the 600 yd line again for the start of the Mini Palma and the wind had increased to around 7-12 mph, still coming from the west. We shot the 600, 800 and 1000 yd segments of the Mini-Palma and we were off the line around Noon. (So nice not to have to pull targets!) A few brave soles then tried the Nokomis Mile (approx 1640 yds from just in front of the cattle gate at the main entrance) but soon found this a waste of ammo and time since without cleaning the butts area of weeds between the normal impact area and the target, the pullers (me and Dennis out of MB) could not see the bullet impacts and thus could not correct the shooters to get on at 1640 yds. The mirage was like soup too so even hits on dirt from 1640 could not be seen by the shooters. Sunday morning woke to bright sunlight, but the ground was still soaking wet from the rain we got around supper time Saturday and thru the night. Very light (1-3 mph) head winds were present at the start of the ISSF match, with swings from 12 to 2 am. Once the ISSF was complete, we met at the clubhouse for the 20 minute protest period and so the shooters could see their ISSF targets. Once the 20 minutes had elapsed, we headed to the 1000 yd line to start the afternoon Ultra Longs match. I changed the match program from 2+15’s to 2+10’s to allow a new first time shooter a chance to fire in this match as well and I told the others that this would allow them extra rounds if they wanted to try going even further out, like to the 1400 yd badger mount (only high spot past 1200 were you can still see the targets). We started at 1000 yds around 11 am and by 12:30 we had completed the 1000, 1100 and 1200 yd portions of the Ultra Longs. Winds had changed to non-existent (NE 0 mph to 7 mph) The FO shooters then went to the 1400 yd mark were they all managed to make hits on the targets. We shut down the 1400 yd line around 1:30 pm and went to the clubhouse to finalize the stats and hand out the awards, with 5-10 minutes to spare before the skies opened up with rain so bad you could not see past 400 yds clearly. All in all, I was very happy since we may now have two new guys hooked on LR shooting, one of which ran out of ammo at the 1200 yd line of the Mini-Palma but his berm partner finished his required shoots at 1200 and then offered this new shooter to use his rifle to finish is score. While the new shooter was ticked pink and hooked, and he fired his best stage in the Mini at 1200 yds using this borrowed rifle and ammo.
