2015 Federal Election - where do the parties stand?

Wayne Easter said that gun control costs them 60 seats,
and that any party who isn't at least the minority government can't do squat.

The Liberals were worried they might stay a 3rd place party.

Those three ideas combined with their desires,
and so they paired down their desires to this:

The Liberals:

There's been a lot of good deconstruction of this platform already. I'll let the document speak for itself.

We will take action to get handguns and assault weapons off our streets.

We will take pragmatic action to make it harder for criminals to get, and use, handguns and assault weapons. We will:

  • repeal changes made by Bill C-42 that allow restricted and prohibited weapons to be freely transported without a permit, and we will put decision-making about weapons restrictions back in the hands of police, not politicians;
  • provide $100 million each year to the provinces and territories to support guns and gangs police task forces to take illegal guns off our streets and reduce gang violence;
  • modify the membership of the Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee to include knowledgeable law enforcement officers, public health advocates, representatives from women’s groups, and members of the legal community;
  • require enhanced background checks for anyone seeking to purchase a handgun or other restricted firearm;
  • require purchasers of firearms to show a license when they buy a gun, and require all sellers of firearms to confirm that the license is valid before completing the sale;
  • require firearms vendors to keep records of all firearms inventory and sales to assist police in investigating firearms trafficking and other gun crimes;
  • immediately implement the imported gun marking regulations that have been repeatedly delayed by Stephen Harper;
  • and as part of our investment in border infrastructure, invest in technologies to enhance our border guards’ ability to detect and halt illegal guns from the United States entering into Canada.

We will not create a new national long-gun registry to replace the one that has been dismantled.

We will ensure that Canada becomes a party to the international Arms Trade Treaty.

Kate I like your business and I`m happy to support it, along with other sponsors who have been posting pro conservative stuff.

But what happened to the old British Isles philosophy on the discussion of religion, ### and politics?

I guess CGN is not polite company...

I am not sure if CGN qualifies as polite company!! LOL

Bill C-68 was never part of an election platform.

Policy books should be our least concern. Nearly all major gun control has been the result of a reaction to a public tragedy.

Vote for who you think will keep a level head in the event of a public tragedy. Don't vote for who you think will leverage a public tragedy to further their agenda.

Well said!

The Green Party is really active here on the southern Island. They're really easy to approach and talk to because the candidates are always on the sidewalks waving their green signs around. If you want to talk to Lizabeth May you just pull over and walk up to her lol

She's actually not retarded when you talk to her or see her in the debates. One of the things I noticed is she doesn't skirt around issues as much as the Liberals or BQ, fairly direct to the point and well researched. The stats she pulls from don't seem to be as cherry picked, and she doesn't go for as many cheap political gains at the expense of doing what's right.

If they're going to pander to the gun owners, it's actually interesting. In these Victoria ridings, it's home turf for the Greens and they can actually beat out the un-Canadian NDP candidates. Unfortunately, the CPC doesn't fare well here, save one riding in Langford where they came close a couple times.

I don't like the whole strategic voting thing, as in, voting for someone you don't like just so the guy you like even less doesn't win because the candidate you want to win has no chance. I think you should vote for the candidate who represents your beliefs, even if he can't win. This is why I'm going to vote for the CPC candidate but 4 years from now I might vote Green if they keep up the good work.

^ the green candidate in my area is rabidly anti gun and will never get my vote. Seriously people I have no idea how anyone could for the other partys! The economy and firearms should be the top priority for anyone on this site

Giving more control over firearms to the rcmp would be a very dangerous move for cituzens. I find many of the rcmp officers I've had to deal with regarding firearms to be very uneducated regarding laws. I've hard one try to charge me for unlawful storage on my at while my gun was in a hard case with padlock

I hope that the national masses are more intelligent than many voters in my riding. It appears that the intent to simply oust Harper, has blinded many to the facts. They seem oblivious to the old saying, "Jump from the frying pan, into the fire". It amazes me how educated people do not understand that the removal of one right, can and likely will, lead to the removal of more rights. I watched the final debate, on my local cable channel and the candidate for The Communist Party, yes, I'm serious, was better educated and more well spoken than the Liberal candidate. I have a couple of gun owning "friends" that want Harper gone. I will be quick to remind them of their utter stupidity, if I hear any complaints. :ang3:kickInTheNuts::HR::rey2:slap:

It is sad how many people just don't read or listen!! One guy I work with said that he won't be voteing for Steve because " He just spent $40 million each on 10 fighter jets" He had no knowledge of the F-35 program and feels we don't need any military??? Very sad..

well said... level headed politicians with a backbone are hard to find

The problem with the Greens is that they are too polarized and their candidates are too extreme in their views. You need to find balance between the economic, social and environmental policies, but not at the expense of the either one. Furthermore, you can only have social and environmental progress if your economy is performing. The NDP favor the social side of the bottom line, but fail to understand the impacts to the economy... Which function to fund social and environmental programs. The greens favor a balanced approach in ideology, but their candidate are too focused on environmental programs to be a realistic governing party. The liberals just fail at all three with unclear expectations and objectives.

The conservatives understand that only through a strong economy can Canada further develop its social and environmental performance (which are already world class). We led the world in the Great Recession and can continue to have a powerful influence on the world stage, but straining our economy (and progress) and global compititivness for the expense of election promises will only push us further behind.

We don't need change people.

If the Greens ever want to be thought of more than a far fringe nut bar party they need to get rid of May and the other nut bars around her.
