The 2015 IPSC Alberta Provincial Championships will be held this July 3-5 at the BTSA Action Range on the Homestead Complex about 50 km west of Calgary. This is the same week-end as the start of the Calgary Stampede, so hotel accommodation will be at a premium. Additionally the Full-Bore Provincial Rifle Championship is being held the same week-end which means the parking lot on the range where people had previously been able to park their RV will be in use by the full-bore rifle shooters.
In an effort to help locate some accommodation for those competitors that would like to attend the ISPC AB Provincials, I did a quick Google search today. Not a comprehensive or complete search, but a sampling of the vacancies still available as of today. This sample list shows the hotel name, location, rate and driving time to the BTSA range. The room rates are before tax and probably for the cheapest room that is available for the period Thursday July 2 to Monday July 6. Sorted by cost:
Calgary North ThriftLodge; ... NW Calgary; ... $125/night; ... 45 minutes;
Super 8; ... Airdrie; ... $125/night; ... 1 hour 15 minutes;
Ramada Inn; ... Canmore; ... $130/night; ... 1 hour;
Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino; ... Morley Flats; ... $140/night; ... 35 minutes;
Travelodge Calgary University; ... NW Calgary; ... $155/night; ... 45 minutes;
Days Inn; ... Cochrane; ... $160/night; ... 50 minutes;
Coast Hotel; ... Canmore; ... $180/night; ... 1 hour;
Ramada Inn; ... Cochrane; ... $185/night; ... 50 minutes;
Sandman Inn; ... NW Calgary; ... $255/night; ... 40 minutes.
As the above list shows there are hotel rooms available as of the end of February. If you are from outside of Calgary and are considering attending this match you should book your hotel room NOW. I do not specifically recommend any of the above locations. There is enough variety in this sampling to be able to say that rooms are available at a fair price and within reasonable driving distance to the range. Most Calgary residents expect that the trip to the range will take 45 minutes, so the above driving times are very reasonable.
For those that are looking for a place to park their RV, as mentioned above there will not be RV parking on the range this year. My sampling of RV locations found the following:
Calloway RV Park; ... Springbank; ... $27-40/night; ... 35 minutes;
Bow River Edge RV; ... Cochrane; ... $40-45/night; ... 50 minutes;
Calgary West Campground; ... NW Calgary; ... $40-55/night; ... 35 minutes.
If you are thinking about attending the 2015 IPSC Alberta Provincial Championship, deal with the accommodation as soon as you can, and then prepare to enjoy the match.
The competition will be 15 stages with a minimum of 249 rounds (plus chrono). This will be an IPSC Level III competition and the sanctioning request has been submitted. Sponsorship is coming in and the match copy will be published once the match has been approved for Level III and all the sponsors have been determined. More information will be available on the website (www.btsaDOTca/matches) shortly.
