The Osoyoos Wildlife Federation will hold its 16th Annual 1000M shooting competition on May 14th & 15th with a practice day on Friday the 13th. There are separate competitions for both "Hunting" and "Unlimited" rifles that provide for lots of shooting to keep everyone happy.
For complete information on this popular event please send your email address to; Aubrey White by email; rifle@telus.net.

We will again be shooting on the Silver Mountain electronic targets the proved to be so popular last year. Shooters and spectators get instant feedback on each shot on a smartphone, laptop or on most other electronic devices that can receive a WiFi signal. The system plots your shots on target and calculates your total score and group size. It also records the velocity of each shot as it reaches the target. Shooters should be aware that this system can only read shots traveling above the speed of sound (1,127 ft/s) when they reach the target so be sure your ammunition is capable of doing this before your arrive. Shots that do not exceed the speed of sound at the target will be scored as a miss. Most all high performance calibers exceed the speed of sound at that distance.

Thanks for the imbed 308BAR. We just received confirmation that we will be shooting on the Silver Mountain electronic targets this year. We have added an afternoon of practice on Friday May 22nd from 1 to 5pm.

Many many thanks to the organizers and sponsors of this event, especially Daniel Chisholm/ Silver mountain electronic targets for
attending and helping us threw the learning curve of the system.
It was amazing and ran fast and smooth without any major glitches, I can definitely see an end coming to pulling targets:)

A shout out to Banished and all those who put together a great facility. And letting me plink on the new targets.

Also, Daniel for answering my endless questions. Gotta love a guy that really and truly understands his craft and stuff. Nice gear and very nice presentation on the Ipads and readers. Definitely a system worth considering if putting a LR range together.

All the best with your sales and development.

Now... did a 270 dominate?

Jerry

Jerry, marshman, thanks... those are awfully nice things to say. It was really great to finally meet both of you in person. I thought that "Banished" ran a really great match.

This was the first range in BC I've ever had the chance to visit and I have to say it was completely gorgeous:

Here's something I thought was pretty cool - a screen capture of what I think was the winning group fired in the Hunting Rifle class, it would be a Tikka in 7mmRemMag with Berger 180s:

Ordinarily when someone says that their hunting rifle has fired a ~half-MOA three-shot group at 1000+ yards the word for that is "BS", however I saw it happen at least a couple of times. It's nice to see what good gear, driven by good shooters, is capable of delivering.

Once of the nicest info screens I have seen from an E target..... was like the designer might actually shoot this sport and know what other shooters would want to see for info :)

Note the FPS readings for each shot. Yes, that is the velocity of the bullet through the target (within the set up error which I think they sorted out). For me, it answered a whole lot of questions for a new bullet I have been shooting and can be a huge aid in LR tuning.

And yes, if you have a "slow" shot, it typically goes low on the target.

Note that the velocities were very tight for spread AT 1000M... better then some loads at the bench.

in case you are wondering, the target was actually designed with those spacing as the match didn't use an ICRFRA or NRA 1000yds/900m target. Any target can be scaled and presented to the shooter so the target can change to match the sport or range. I think it can be done on the "fly".

Ummm, maybe other images can be presented as targets to add some fun.... Like a Deer or Elk or Coyote. hint, hint...

That's cool...

You mean something along these lines....?

The German hunters are quite keen on shooting at this sort of target, you'll find targets like this at most hunting-oriented shooting ranges and clubs in Germany. We have programmed our system to be able to handle "image" targets like this. The German Hunting Federation ("DJV") has about a half-dozen targets like this (deer, elk, boar, fox, mountain goat), meant to be shot at 50m, 100m and 300m, including some "running boar" targets that are shot at 50m on a mechanical trolley (to which we have mounted electronic target sensors). You can see the kinds of targets available for purchase http://djv-service.de/schiessscheiben/djv-wildscheiben/papierscheiben/ (a crude google translation from German but plenty good enough to get the idea and see the various animal target designs)

I must say a few words about Daniel Chisholm and his Silver Mountain Targets. Daniel and his targets turned our annual 1000M Shoot from an interesting local event into a very attractive shoot now on many long-range shooters bucket list. Under the term “Customer Service” the dictionary should have Daniel’s photo. His customer support is the best.

Daniel mentions the 5.1" 3 shot group shot at 1000m with a hunter gun with a 10x scope. That is outstanding performance under any circumstances but the full story is even more impressive. The rifle, a Tikka T3 Varminter in 7mm Rem Mag, belongs to one of our local club members. It is brand new and we mounted the scope and shot it for the first time only a few days before this competition. There was no time to do any load development so I gave him a load that had shot well in previous T3's. He fired 6 rounds to zero it at our 100 yard range - it printed a 1/2 MOA group. He cranked on 29 minutes of elevation and was hitting the scoring rings on his 1st target at 1000 meters (1094 yds). The load is.... 175gr Sierra MK bullet, 62.5 grs H4831sc powder, CCI 250 Primers and Hornady brass. This load also shoots well with 180gr Bergers.

Marshal Ambrose must be mentioned as he turned in many superb targets with his .270 Wildcat. Two of these targets were back-to-back perfect scores and it must be remembered we shoot on the 600 yard NRA target which have much smaller scoring rings than standard 1000 yard targets and our distance is 1000m not 1000 yds

Will try to post complete shoot results when I figure out how.

Regards;

Aubrey
