Additional Match Instructions for Competitors:
1. All rifles (and attachments) to be used by a competitor during the match must be submitted by the competitor for inspection by the Match Director or their delegate (weighed, measured, etc.) at the time of registration. Failure to submit a rifle(s) for inspection or use of a rifle which has not been inspected will result in the competitor being deemed ineligible and/or disqualified from the match. Except by prior special arrangement with the Match Director, all competitors must register in person and have their rifle inspected on Thursday June 27, 2019.
2. Safety is paramount. Rifles will have actions open, magazines removed (if equipped), and an Empty Chamber Indicators (ECI) inserted into the chamber at all times except when on the firing line during the preparation period or during live firing. ECIs must be full length and enter into the bore of the rifle at least 1” minimum.
3. At no time is a competitor to leave the firing line with a loaded rifle. All competitors are responsible for safe rifles while on the firing line. At no time shall a rifle be removed from position without the competitor having first placed an ECI in the empty chamber of their rifle and verified by the competitor’s scorekeeper and the Range Officer. The penalty for violating this rule is disqualification for both competitor and scorekeeper.
4. There is a mandatory daily safety briefing for all competitors. Failure to attend will result in the competitor being deemed ineligible and/or disqualified from the day’s match, including the team competition.
5. All matches will be fired in squadded relays of three grouped shooters per relay alternating shot for shot (Bisley Style). There will be three relays per target.
6. Squadding: Relays on the first day will be random (generally based upon receipt of registration and payments), while the final two days relays will be determined by placement (seeded). Squadding assignments will be available one half hour prior to the start of each day’s matches.
7. Rifles will be placed either (a) in your arms, (b) on the supplied rifle racks, (c) on the firing line, or (d) in your personal vehicle. No rifles will be left upon the ground when competitors are off of the firing line.
8. Competitors are permitted 45 seconds per shot. At three shooters to a mound and a 2+15 round match, this is 38.25 minutes. Each Relay will have 45 minutes to set up, shoot and retire. This will be based upon a 3 minute prep (including the move forward to the line), 2 minute target exposure (dry firing permitted) and 40 minutes to shoot and get off of the firing line. No ammunition may be loaded until the command to do so is made by the Range Officer. Time limits will be strictly enforced.
9. During the 3 minute preparation period at the beginning of each relay, the ECI may be removed, but no ammunition may be loaded at this time. Anyone who fires a shot during the preparation period will be disqualified from the competition.
10. Unlimited fouling shots will be permitted for a 1 minute period at the first shooting position for each shooter on each day. Rounds will be fired onto the rear berm only and hits will not be indicated.
11. The following relay is expected to have their gear behind the firing line 10-15 minutes in advance of their scheduled firing time, in the event that the relay may start early. Late arrivals will not be allowed to insert into the firing line and will score zero for that relay.
12. Parking adjacent to the 800m point and at the 900m will be limited to RSO and handicapped competitors only (no competitor parking). Be prepared to walk the distance from the 800m parking area to the 900m point via the range road. There is no parking on the range road for safety reasons.
13. Final scores will be posted at the range at the end of each day. Competitors will have 30 minutes to verify that their scores have been correctly entered.
14. Targets used in this match will be US NRA Long Range Target (5" Vee, 10" Bull).
15. This match may use electronic targets for scoring. In that event, each competitor is responsible to have their own electronic device to view and score their target. Should the electronic targets fail, competitor marking will be required by all.
16. Match schedules, timings and/or final course of fire may be modified by the Match Director due to any conditions affecting the match.
17. Competitors shall be required to assist the Chief Range Officer in RSO capacity, or the Match Director as called upon.
18. Handicapped Competitors: The AFRA range has two concrete benches at the 800 & 900m shooting positions to accommodate those shooters with disabilities that cannot shoot in a prone position. This is an honour system. If there is an abuse of a perceived disability to obtain a perceived competitive advantage, the Match Director will have final authority. Bring a Doctor’s note if you have any perceived ambiguity.
Site Amenities: The Homestead Shooting Centre is approximately 45 minutes west of the Calgary city limits. The closest hotels are in the towns of Cochrane and Canmore, the Stoney Nakoda Casino (junction of Highways #1 & #40), and on the west side of Calgary.
Limited primitive camping will be available at the range, with no electrical hook-ups nor water/sewer services. Please remember that you are located in a wildlife area frequented by four legged predators, so proper food storage and personal security is important. Latrines are available on-site.
Meals will not be catered. Competitors will be required to bring/prepare their own meals and eat when they are not shooting. The Potluck dinner on Saturday is voluntary. Bring some extra vittles to swap and share with your shooting linemates.
Contacts: For letters of invitation, match programs, or additional information, please contact the Match Director, Glen Taylor at
