2023 Alberta Fullbore Association Tentative Match Schedule

AFRA Members and Welcomed Guests

The AFRA is pleased to announce our tentative competitive match schedule for the 2023 season at Our AFRA Homestead Competition Range west of Calgary at the APRA Shooting Complex.

As of Q4 2022, the dates are tentative and subject to possible change. Actual daily ranges are selected for each match based upon the number of shooters we have registered and can fit fit on any given firing berm. But rest assured, for shooters that change load, it will be either LONG or SHORT days as described below:

Any “SHORT” days will only have 300, 400, 500, and 600 meters days combinations.

Any “LONG” days will be some combination of 700, 800, and 900 meters.

70 rounds per day minimum but bring extra in case there is a glitch with the electronic targets.

Please follow this thread for any and all updates.

All matches are by Pre-Registration only. AFRA has migrated to the Jotform program which is easy to use on a phone or any device.

The usual protocol is to post “the next match” on the Monday following the completion of a match with a cutoff on the Tuesday 8:00 pm the week of the match you are registering for. The 2 exceptions are the provincial championships which will be a month before with a maximum number of shooters allowed before the registration is shut and the New To Long Range Competition Day.

All match registration invitations will be posted on this thread with complete details of dates and ranges.

AFRA Guests And Shooters Curious About Fullbore Competition

Over the past couple years the AFRA has received numerous questions about how are matches are conducted.

Last year, some of our members and their families collaborated to make the video that explains what we do better than any document could.

For experienced competitors who have never visited our Homestead Range west of Calgary, the video showcases the layout of our facility. We hope you will come and shoot with us in the 2023 season.

AFRA Member Sets New F-TR Range Competition Record at SNW In Phoenix

AFRA Member Sets New F-TR Range Competition Record at SNW In Phoenix

AFRA Members and Friends

The Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association would like to congratulate our member John N who set a Ben Avery Range Competition Record at 1000 yards at the Ben Avery Range in Phoenix, Arizona in February at the South West Nations this winter.

John shot a 200-14X at 1000 yards which is now the highest score for the facility during a competition in F-TR.

For the newer members who have not competed in the USA, the NRA uses a 10” Bulls Eye for 10 points and a 5” X ring. There are 20 shots per string. So that shows John had 20 Bulls and 14 were what we would call “V’s”.

John’s rifle was built locally near Calgary with a Stock from Manitoba. Berger 185 Juggernauts with Varget powder in Lapua 308 small primer brass.

The AFRA would like to publicly congratulate John on this huge accomplishment. John started his hobby at the AFRA Homestead Range and competes at all matches held there. Just another example of the talent that has developed at the AFRA range.

AFRA May 6/7 Season Opener Cancelled Due To Weather

AFRA Members and Guests

AFRA was looking forward to holding the season opener for the first time in years.

For many years, it had to be cancelled because there was too much snow on the road to berms and the butts. It has cleared early for the first time in years, and now we get rained out.

Thank you for making the effort to attend.

Next match is scheduled for May 27/28.

AFRA Match Fee Payments Clarifications

AFRA Members and Guests

As most members and guests are aware, over the past year we have moved to electronic online registration, to online electronic membership applications and renewals to now having match fees paid by EMT (Or EFT as some banks call it). AFRA has set up a specific email address for these payment to be directly deposited automatically without password to the AFRA bank account.

The address for payments is: AFRA.Memberships@gmail.com. AFRA Secretary Treasurer manages all payments and memberships. This email is for deposits only. Questions sent to email will not be answered because it is not monitored.

For all inquiries, our Communications Officer is in charge of afratargetshooters@gmail.com. All questions should be sent there.

As the season goes on, we are changing the registration forms to clearly state the email address for Match Fees.

Thank you for working with AFRA on this transition and we trust that the system is getting streamlined and easy to use.

AFRA Members Successful at 2023 USA V2 Match.

In the US a new shooting concept is being explored where 32 each FTR and

FO shooters are invited to a rifle range in Spencer TN for a double

knockout pair shooting format on ICFRA 5-point targets. Qualification is

gained on a point format based on shooting larger US matches, which

guarantees some damn good competitors are showing up. Information on the

competition can be found on the following link:

https://fclasspointsseries.com/

It’s an annual event and this was the third year that the match has been

held - primary sponsors are VihtaVuori and Vortex (hence V2). Five

Canadians were invited this year - four F-TR shooters and one F-Open.

From Alberta we have local (AFRA Member) shooters Armen P and Eric B; from Manitoba Gerry W and Scott K. The sole F-O shooter was Brad T from British Columbia.

Armen was the last one to be knocked off the winner side, then went on

to win the remaining loser side, coming back in the final to knock off

twice the same shooter that knocked him out in order to win.

Congratulations to Armen for winning this years’ V2 Competition!
