204 Ruger Crattering Primers

Hey guys, not sure if this has been discussed on here in a previous post or not, but I couldn't find anything on it.

I recently bought a Remington VTR in .204 Ruger. Picked up a couple boxes of Hornady 40gr V-Max, and a box of Remington AccuTip in 36gr for breakin and sight in. Upon firing the first few rounds, inspecting brass and found the primers to be cratered excessively - to the point that if these were handloads, we'd definately be heading back to the bench to pull bullets, and start again. Just wondering if any of you have had similar experiences.

I had the local gunsmith inspect the bolt, and chamber, everything checks out within spec's.

Those bullets are having a tough time with that triangular barrel causing excessive pressureSeriously if 2 different factory loads are cratering I would be looking for excessive firing pin clearance in the bolt face.

Nothing new there. Remington uses the same large diameter fireing pin for their small rifle cases as they do for the large and magnum rifle cases. The "crater" is cosmetic and only bothers those that are new to it or have with nothing better to worry about.

My XR-100 does the same thing. I sent it for a warantee repair (they replaced the bolt body) because it was actually rupturing with factory loads. Still craters now, but I haven't had a rupture since.

IMO, QC at Remington is crap these days. I've had a few recently, and all have had various issues. I really can't see myself buying another new Remington rifle again.

All my hornady 32 gr bought ammo has craters, same could be said for my uncles. Both are rem 700's. In the process of handloading for both rifles and will see what happens.
