Hi, I was looking into purchasing a bolt action rifle but I could not decide, which round is better for a new shooter?

I was thinking if I got with a remington, I would get either a .17 rem fireball,
but if I go with a savage, I would go with a 204 ruger.

I want to go with a savage because their rifles are cheaper but I'm not sure about the recoil and cost of 204 rugers.

I would like to also go with a remington because their rifles are high quality but I know the .17 remington fireball rounds are expensive. I dont want to go with a .22 long rifle because I would like the extra kick.

Thanks for the help.

There is no felt recoil from a .204 Ruger in my experience...you can watch the bullet impact in the scope.

Neither .204 nor .17 will do anything for a new shooter that .223 won't do cheaper and with more available ammo/components.

Just my 2 cents, and probably worth what you paid for it.

i have them all and if the 17FB had come out first i would never have bought 204....
everything said about the 223 here is true but man the 17 is plain fun...
i find the 204 louder than the 222/223/17, in the varmint weight 26" barrels the 204 DOES recoil enough to come off scope compared to the others (still not like a 22-250 or 243 but it is noticeable especially if you are shooting the various calibers side by side)

Do they make Varmint Grenades for the 17FB?

Tried them in the .224 cal size both the 50 gr and the 36gr and was relly not that happy with one or the other

the 50 gr VG was just around the 1" group but not under very often, and the 36gr came in around .65 to .75 ish
Not sure if they come in the .17 but I do have some .17 in the v max 25gr and will do everything the VG says it will but the V-max does it better sub .50 all day long

no more VG for me :puke:

V-mav are great and like they say
If it isn't broke don't try and fix it

I own a 17fb and a 223. No VG for 17 cal, I shoot 20gr Vmax & 25gr Berger in my Fireball

I'd take a 223 over a 17 for all'round plinking though
