I'm curious to learn about the 204 Ruger. I was thinking of a Remington 700 platform in 233 as a starter bolt gun for getting the kids into long range shooting. Thoughts on the 204 Ruger cartridge for this purpose? I'd be happy to handload for it.

It's a laser beam on coyotes out to 300 or so. It just kind of shakes when you pull the trigger, not much in the way of recoil. And generally accurate.

But Dan is correct as usual - .223 will be cheaper. It doesn't kick much more. The bullet selection is crazy good right now for varminting, target shooting, and even medium game hunting (where legal). There's usually a trade-off on there somewhere but that's why you buy two or three of them :) and it's available in a lot more rifles. Also, with a good target scope and canted base you can *really* stretch it out compared to a .204, those 75-80gr bullets do just fine at 600+.

Its a great cartridge. Some years ago I put a custom 1 in 10 twist heavy contour barrel on a Remington 700 VLS (it was a .204 to start with), and it has been a great target shooter. It can still shoot the 32 gr pills but also has the ability to handle 50 gr bullets.

The 204 is certainly not a long range cartridge. The bullets are too light and would be tossed around in the wind past 300 yards.
