20ga for deer

I met a fellow last year that says he hunts moose with a 20 gauge and try's to get within 50 to 75 yds., or maybe I heard him wrong. If he does, I would say it would be just fine for deer.
 
20 ga is excellent choice for deer. The excepted minimum amount of energy required to ethically put down a deer is 500 ft lbs. The standard 20ga slug produces 648 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards which would be about the max range provided your well practiced with your slug gun.

20 gauge is bad medicine for deer inside 100yrds. I am using one this week and dropped two in their tracks. With rifled slugs. As posted ealier hit em right and they'll go no where.

What do you guys use for a barrel/choke combo?
Rifled barrel?
Smooth-bore with:
-modified choke?
-imp. cyl. choke?
-rifled choke tube?

I only ask because I can't get mine to group better than 8 inches at 50 yards. I'm putting them through a 20" barrel with a modified choke. I don't have any other chokes to experiment with either. :( I don't suppose any of you know where I can find some Colonial True Tube chokes in Canada...?

Generally, no choke is better than having a choke. Rifled choke tubes and rifled barrels are best. Cantilever barrel mounted scopes are better than action mounted ones.

What kind of gun and what kind of sighting system? Have you tried different brands of ammo. Depending on the brand, slug diameter is different.
 
I second no choke and canteliver scope mount or at least get your barrel to sit tight with some kind of shims. Vented barrel will have a bad habit of twisting after first shot, so if your is vented than try aiming higher with first shot and lower point of aim as barrel temperature goes up. Altogether shotgun barrels tend to be way too flimsy for such heavy projectiles.
