I started shooting SC a couple summers ago informally one night a week at the gun club. Figured I needed a 28" 8.5lb 12g O/U. Decided I would never hunt with that gun so sold it. I shoot only to hone my bird hunting skills, doubt I would ever get into it competitively. Was thinking next summer of using my favourite bird gun which is a 20g Citori Feather Lightning. I realize it really isn't ideal but I love that gun and shoot it well on live birds. So,would dropping down to a 20 change much? Our club tends to have most stations present at @ 35 yds or less.

What is your success ratio on live birds at the 35 yrd mark?

Im no expert at Sporting Clays, but when shooting against the guys with the 12's I was lacking.

When shooting against myself I did fine. ;)

Now, I just shoot the 20 at Grouse, I find that clays stick to my Partial

Lots of people shooting 12g 7/8 oz loads. Yours just come out of a smaller hole. Go for it. Got my a** kicked last weekend by a guy with a 20. (not that it's all that hard to kick my a**)

Rob!

If you shoot to hone your bird hunting skills, don’t worry about your score. Enjoy your 20.

This sums it up very well. If you need to be competitive against other shooters, then perhaps the 12 would be a better bet. Your choice. !!!!!! My wife uses a 20g for the lower recoil and breaks her share of clays.

I fell in love with sporting clays this last year. I'm nit very good. Ok for a newbie might be an accurate description.
I bought a new citori white lightning in 20g with 28" barrels when I started. I probably averaged around 70/100 with that gun. I started going through 12's like underwear since I decided I wanted a 'competitive' gun to help my score. Bet you now my average is 62/100. Settled on a citori cx with 30's in 12G and I like it enough and realized I better stop jumping around. My point is, just enjoy the Friggen game for what it is and shoot a gun you want to stick with. Your plan to sharpen up with your 20 is a sound one! 20 vs. 12 won't hurt your scores either wsy in my view.

At our club almost no one shoots a 12 If they do they are new or have 7/8 loads in them anyway. Most people shoot 20 and the hard core guys shoot tubes down to 410. Enjoy your 20 +1

I generally shoot the same, right about 70% with either 20 ga or 12 ga guns that fit me. Wish I could see some advantage one way or the other, if there was I'd use it, but results are basically the same for me.

I shoot 7/8 12ga quite a bit- sometimes even drop to 3/4. I add a choke based on my pattern board experiments. There definitely are some targets that are a challenge to hit- but I miss those with a normal load too. If you are shooting for fun I would stick with the 20 and not worry about it!

if you hunt with a 20 ga and only shoot clay to hone your wing shooting skills. Then shoot your 20 ga , have fun. I shoot 12,, 11/8 loads and have been beat several times buy a 20ga and the right shooter. have fun

I shoot a Cynergy Euro Sporting 20 at the Trap and Skeet range. If you're on you're on, 12 or 20. Love the 20 because of the weight and challenge. I load with 7.5's for Trap and 9's for skeet.
Makes me more accurate when i go back to the 12.
