was wondering if anybody has had anything to do with Langsford Myra 22-17 Myra extruder .It is an interesting concept where a barrel in .172 is chambered to 22-17 which gives greater penetration plus a gain of 200 fps due to a long tappered chamber that swages the bullet to 17cal .

You basically insert a 22 long rifle cartridge and out comes a 17 cal bullet .

kinda like a 17 mach 11 for the price of shooting 22 LR

well we finished the 22-17 on a martini and the results were favorable .It grouped not too bad at the fifty yard on the mini wheats E target with the peep sights .It doesn't like the hollow points as the group opened up .Didn't try the penetration through a steel plate yet .Might have to scope the next one and try the 100 yard as the peep are ok but eyes aren't as good

So basically you put a 40 gr 22 rim fire cartridge into the chamber and out comes a 40 gr 17 cal long bullet here are a few pics



 
first barrel was a 1x9 twist and the rifle did not group and tumbled bullets and tore the target.Take 2 after more research made the new barrel with a 1x6 twist as Langsford used ,missed that in the first articles but learn and carry on .
 
finished 200 rounds of remington thunder bolts .The forcing cone is clean and just noticeable amount in front of the throat ,similar to my 10-22. It appears to be a bit more accurate in the 204 version according to the short article ,but can't find the twist rate that langsford used as again it will be a heavier long bullet
 
Cool. My father in law accidentally fired some 22 LR through a 17hmr before. He got two off before I could get to him after the first one didn't sound right. Luckily no issues, but both cleared and didn't seem to do any damage.
 
Well, it's certainly the right action to use for something like that. I might trust one of the 5mm Remingtons to it too, but those are harder to come by.

How long is the forcing cone, more or less?

the action I used was more convience than requierment as the martini is a slow take down and only one dove tail to cut .the originals were buit on the brno 2 and norc coppies of it .I will measure up the reamer and get back I would guess aprox 1 1/2 inches
 
the fired cases don't look any different than the 22 martini .On both you can see the extractor segment as these are a few thou larger than the chamber/case

Now all we need is for someone to come up with a tapered, fully rifled, gain twist barrel for it. :)

Interesting reading about the pressures. Would have thought it would have been higher than it worked out. Goes to show that theory loses out to experiment sometimes.
