I am new to reloading.
My father has some equipment and I am very interested incustom loading 22-250. I am looking for a load to shoot sub MOA and for hunting coyotes with minimal pelt damage at ranges up to 400 yds (mostly 100-200 though)

My father is also looking for a 22-250 load that shoots more like a .22lr, for small game.

Any suggestions on where to start?

I am shooting a Tikka T3 lite Synthetic Stainless and my pa is using a Browning A bolt micro Lefty.

Sierra 55 grain FMJ bullet.

For your coyotes:
H-414 From 36.0 grains to 41.5 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

But 400 yards is really pushing it.

For the light loads:
SR-4759 From 11.0 grains to 22.0 grains
Remington 9-1/2 Primer

bill c68,
My current favorite pelt saver bullets are the Berger Varmint Match, in 52 and 50 grain. These used to be called MEFs. Exits are few and the Bergers are a very accurate bullet.
There are a lot of good powder choices for the '250. 4895, 4064, Varget, H380 & 414 all work. There are plenty of others.

I figued I should revive this thread, going to start reloading very soon.

I have a buddy ordering some Vmax Bullets this week, I have heard these are good for Yotes, what weight should I try first? I was thinking 50gr.

Any other suggestion on a deadly accurate round out of a Tikka T3 (1:14 Twist)

My Savage has a love for the Sierra 60g HP flat base with Win 760 ball powder. Not sure how they would work in your Tikka as my Savage has 1:12 twist. It is rare when they exit,(in my experience)and I can only think of one time I had one exit (on an old ##### at about 130 yds.)
Any V-max, 55g and under, and IMR 4064 would be a good place to start if you dont think your rifle will stabilize a 60 grain. Some do ,some dont. $0.02 worth.
Good Luck

A suggestion..........
IMHO 400 yds is a loooooooooong way for a 250.
More power to you if you can keep the bullet on an 8.5 X 11 paper consistently. Try a few a see if you are able to kill rather than cripple.
400 yds is a long shot for any rifle, I am just looking for the load that has the potential, I doubt if I do... yet.

I am in all likelyhood going to be shooting in the 50-250 yd range.

So better question then... What is a good load for 22-250 for accuracy, knockdown power and pelt saving?

When I had mine I used a 55 grn A-Max infront of 35 grn Varget ignited by a Fed 210M primer. Win cases were collet sized only. THe rifle really liked the bullets seated 0.01 off the lands (.35 - .5" groups), however the mags of these guns does not allow this. The only option you have is to seat the bullets out as far as the mag allows and still cycle reliably (0.05 off the lands in my rifle producing .6-.75" groups) I shot this load out to 600 yrds at our fullbore range and it held a 1/2 minute water line with no problem. Wind was a bit of an issue but for the most part I could hold it in the V unless I screwed up. Bottom line the load had the potential to kill a yote at 600 but alot has to do with the shooter. I personally would not recommend it. Keep your shots to 300 yrds and you will be fine. Another bonus about using Varget is that it is temp insensitive for the most part so you will not have to readjust your zero for winter temperatures.
As for pelt damage the load was not bad. It all depends if you hit a major bone or just stick it through the ribs.
Happy hunting and I hope that Foxpro works for you.
