Looks like I could gain about 1000fps using the 55 grain ballistic tip that my 223 rem likes so much. :evil:

I'm assuming these would need to be done in a heavy barrel to allow enough meat around the chamber and help manage heat - meaning you couldn't just rechamber an existing sporter weight 223 to try this caliber?

I built the 22/284 using a remington barrel and rethreading it to small ring Mauser(Turk). All done the barrel is only 23" and I get 4000 well under max loads. My load I settled on is 53.5 IMR 4350 for 3950 with 55 VMax's. I've loaded up to 57gr without dangerous pressure signs.
My theory is that I should be able to get good barrel life due to using lighter loads while enjoying high velocities and in a compact rifle as compared to factory Swifts;) We'll see! Besides , it's fun! Last couple days driving to work I keep wondering how one of those fluted 26" Savage barrels would act so chambered;)
 
Tim, re the trigger, I already had the Basix sitting in my drawer so I put it on. I'm sure that could be done without.

As an adendum to what I said earlier, here are a couple of groups fired at 100yds with 55 gr BT's at 4000 fps. The one on the right is 8 shots fired in rapid succession. I can't see ho a heavy barrel would help.

Was it a remington heavy barrel, or sporter?

I'd most likely do the build on a savage action. I don't think I'd want to go 26" though, as it would be my main coyote rig. I'm glad to hear you get such great performance with a more manageable barrel length. I can certainly see the appeal of the 26" barrel if you already have one that's shorter for carrying in the field. :cool:

Btw, I think you would save a ton of cash if you moved closer to work so you had less time to think on the drive! :D
 
Heavy barrel! The first loads I tried were those I read in manuals (online as I haven't found much printed). Most loads called for slower burning powders. I loaded RL22 up to 58grs and found velocities low but the light show was spectacular at dusk. Backing off to less of a faster burning powder I gained velocity. Gonna go with some Varget one of these days and I bet I get better velocity yet. Best accuracy is sub 4000 although the rifle can do much more even with the short barrel. @4600 accuracy is for #### with loads I've tried thus far. Feeding the fat case has also been an issue. The Middlestead would be a wiser choice I think for practical purposes. 55"s @ 4000 out of 24" should be easy to get with that chamber/tt
 
I had a 22-250 that I used for years then a 6mm-284 wildcat that also worked awesome but I also used my 308 Norma Mag and a 300 Win Mag.

Results where always the same with the 30 cal guns 1 small hole in and one small hole out and every coyote dropped instantly.

There was a time that I tried Sierra 110gr HP's to see what they would do.

This was a different story resulted in 1 hole in and shrapnel blowing out the off side... Not a pretty picture...
 
I use .30-06, loaded with 168 gr BTHP, 45 grains of H4985. Small entry hole, small exit hole, = tumbling, dead 'yote. No problem to 350 yards, lasered. That should be far enough for most guys

A 223 reaches that far... with that much power you should be taking them at 750 yards easy. :p
 
Ever notice when someone shoots long range its always rounded to an even #.
I shot my coyote at a lasered 950 yards:dancingbanana: , never 941 or 972.
I've shot a steel gong at 600 plus meters with a 220 Swift........Ok it took me 3 tries but I hit it:rockOn:
