Have a Weatherby 22/250 super varmint master. Loaded up some 70 grain speer bullets. Took it to the range and set up the gong at 100 meters. Now this gong is 550- 3/8 inch steel. Them 70 grainers went right through that gong like a hot knife through butter. These were just regular loads, nothing hot or anything like that. My perception of the 22/250 as a hunting rifle for deer and possibly moose just changed. With proper bullet placement I see no problem using this rifle. My 300 Weatherby does not penetrate that gong. My 300H&H does not penetrate and my 338/378 Weatherby using 225 grain Barnes TTSX does not penetrate this gong.

That's why they say speed kills. I've done the same thing with both my friends 22-250 and with my .243win. Thing to keep in mind is range. The smaller bullets that you need to get the higher velocities loose their speed a lot faster. My .243 won't cut through the same plate after 180-200 yards.

I'd switch to Barnes X or Partitions if it were me and poke the moose right in the hump followed by one right between the lookers.I saw a steel plate 1/2" shot by many popular calibers including a .375 H+H at a gunsmiths place once. The only one that went right through was the .220 Swift. You have speed and accuracy on your side .....now you just need a good bullet and the skill to place the shot.....I bought a 788/.223 one time from a guy who's wife bought it as a moose rifle for a gift for her husband from a greasy gun store clerk. He had the gun but it was too small and season was open so he bought a box of Rem FMJ's sighted it in with irons and went hunting.I bought the gun minus 4 rounds from the box of shells...Two to sight in ,one in the bulls hump and the last in the head.He used the money to get a bigger gun but in a pinch it will work..........Harold

All the big guns you used on the same gong did not penetrate cause they were sub 3000fps at the 100 yard line...They all hit the gong with many times more energy then your 22-250 but because the 22-250 was faster then 3000fps, on impact it cuts like a knife...Funny how that works

Your right, with proper bullet type, placement and as long as the range is reasonable the 22-250 is vicious.

Interesting isn't it? I first learned this some years ago also with my .375, shooting 300gr softs. They would dent the gong at 100m but my friends .243 with 95gr Sako factory ammo went through every time.
