Putting a load together for my 22-250 and would appreciate some advice. I will be loading Winchester brass and shooting 55gr. Nosler BT.s. As I shoot magnum primers on everything else I'm leaning towards a small rifle magnum primer, question is what powder. I want something that will handle significant temperature changes and will give me 3600 + FPS. Appreciate your suggestions:)

My .22-250 likes the lighter bullets (sub 55gr) regardless of base profile, but Varget is my go-to powder no matter what. And you'll be looking for your rifle primers in size LARGE. :p CCI Benchrest are my fave, when I can get them. I have a bunch of regular CCI and Winchester right now.

I run Varget, Benchmark or H4895 in my 22-250.

And good luck getting a Small Rifle Mag Primer to stay in the 22-250 primer pocket :p you will need Large Rifle Mag Primers :D

55 GR. SPR SP Hodgdon H4895 .224" 2.350" 32.5 3446 45,000 CUP 35.5 3670 49,300 CUP

55 GR. SPR SP Hodgdon Benchmark .224" 2.350" 31.6 3532 46,200 CUP 33.6 3674 50,200 CUP

55 GR. SPR SP Hodgdon Varget .224" 2.350" 34.0 3490 46,100 CUP 36.5 3664 50,400 CUP

Varget, H-4895, and H-380 work with 52 gr Amax's and 53gr sierra match bullets in my 22-250's. Varget is reported to be the most temperature tolerant of the powders( I have yet to try it at minus temperatures). Cyanide has some good load numbers, mine are similar, but go to the reload books to start. I was using CCI BR#2 primers but switched to federal 410 LRP with no difference in group size on the range. I have yet to get chrono #s for my loads but they all group tight to 200m.

You don't really need a magnum primer and none of the reloading manuals suggest that either. Varget works well and is temperature tolerant. H-380 and Reloader 15 are good choices for a 55 gr., but may not exhibit tolerance to temperature fluctuations, although they give excellent accuracy. Winchester WLR and CCI or CCI-BR (large rifle) primers give consistant velocities with all these powders:welcome:

22-250 load

I recently loaded some 55grain loads for my Sako in 22-250, with Varget and they grouped poorly. I have tried Win 748 for 50 grain loads and they shot very well. large rifle primers should work for you. FS

Years ago when I was working up a load for my 22-250 and wasn't having to much luck Gun's and Ammo came out with an article that had asked their top writters what was there favorite rifle/cartidge/load combo.

Ross Siegfried one of the top shooters then writer of his time decided to write about his 22-250 his load was 36grs IMR4064.

I tried that load and was amazed at the accuracy...

That was 20 years ago and I am still using the same load today.

Yes I have tried other newer powders but keep going back to the IMR4064 load can't improve on perfection.
