I got a mid 1960's Rem 700 in 22-250, with a 24" barrel

I made up a bunch of handloads with Varget and the following bullets : 52 gr Sierra HPBT, 53 gr Hornady HP, 55 gr Winchester PSP, 60 gr Hornady SP. I also bought 3 boxes of factory ammo : Hornady 40 gr Vmax, 50 gr Vmax, 55 gr Vmax

here's my chrony results -

40 gr Factory vmax - 3860 fps

50 gr Factory vmax - 3625 fps

52 gr Sierra HPBT over 35 grains Varget - 3320 fps

53 gr Hornady HP over 35 grains Varget - 3400 fps

55 gr Winchester PSP over 34.5 grains Varget - 3190 fps
Factory vmax - 3345 fps

60 gr Hornady SP over 33.5 grains Varget - 3160 fps

The handloads with Varget were an average of four manual's max loads, reduced by one grain. I was expecting a bit more speed  The rifle shoots fantastic, so the low speed doesn't bother me that much

I did pick up some IMR 4007ssc and loaded up some rounds with the 53 gr HP & 60 gr SP, will test on Sunday

I was going to suggest H380 but I am seeing that the 4007 is right next to it in terms of burn rate.

If you are loking for more speed try some w-760 or H-414.

I have always gotten great velocity and accuracy with the H-414.

+1 on H414. Don't over look Rem 50gr PLHP bulk bullets... they were accurate (high .3's to low .4's) and killed well out of my old BDL...
I don't know the vel. as I didn't have a chrony in those days..
Other powders that worked well were H380 and H4895
Be sure to post your results with 4007ssc...I have seen it advertised but that's about it...

I've found Win. 760 to be a good powder for 22-250s too. It seems to give good velocity and accuracy, but I don't see it listed in many reloading manuals for 22-250 for some reason.

H414 is about all I'll use in a 22-250 with WW760 second. Although I do have some loads with Varget that I am going to try out, up to 37grs with 50gr Varminators and VMax's. Your speeds are pretty slow with Varget.

It seems this rifle has a long throat. I suppose that could effect the pressure/velocity? Big jump to lands should reduce pressure...you'd think :)

could be throat erosion. Gun shoots fantastic so the lower speed doesn't bother me..just perks my curiousity and my tinkering side :)

Tod,

I'd stick with the Varget given the climatic conditions you're going to be dealing with hunting. I went through much the same thing a couple of years back. Accuracy is much preferred over super speed as you well know. Wet and cold, near blizzard conditions, or the sun splitting the rocks, Varget has never let me down. I haven't used another powder that can best it in terms of consistency time and again.

here's my results from today :

40 gr Vmax over 36 grains Benchmark - 3920 fps

53 gr Hornady HP over IMR 4007ssc : 39 grs 3390 fps, 40 grs 3510 fps, 41 grs 3620 fps

55 gr PSP over 34.5 grs Varget - 3330 fps
35.0 grs H4895 - 3475 fps
33.0 grs Benchmark - 3415 fps
39.5 grs W760 - 3440 fps

60 gr Hornady SP over IMR 4007ssc : 37.5 grs 3380 fps
38.5 grs 3355 fps, 39.5 grs 3445 fps

Accuracy with 4007ssc wasn't that great, I got two decent (3/4" or smaller) with 2 out of 6 groups with the 2 bullet types. Temperature was -1C, ammo was same temperature. I stuck a couple rounds of 4007ssc ammo in my inside pocket to warm it up before shooting, both of those shells chrony'd @ 75 fps faster than the ones that were cold.....

37.5 grs 4007ssc with the 60 gr Hornady SP gave a nice .45" 3 shot group @ 100 meters so I loaded up 20 rounds of that and will retest on Sunday and see how consistent it is. If all is good I will use that this winter as my hunting load for coyotes and wolves :) speed was 3380 fps which will be good enuf :D
