My query is quite simple, but there are lots of variables to this equation; what is considered to be acceptable accuracy for a plinker grade bolt action.(my question mark isn`t responding...)
I`ve got a Norc JW-25a with a 3x9 scope on it and am wondering if the groups I`m getting are average or way large...
At 100M today the only group was 4.5 x 2.5 in. for 10 shots. At 50M I shot a 2.5 in. group. Am wondering if its time to pass the ole girl on and get a different bolt action, maybe the Winchester Wildcat....

Personally, I'd say the ole girl has seen her prime-time come and go... I have an inexpensive 10/22 with a bull barrel that shoots 1" at 50 yards rather consistently.

.22 accuracy

Give it a good cleaning, tighten up the action screws, get a good set of bags to rest it on, have a good solid bench, no wind conditions, and a shooter who knows how to handle it.

How many groups did you fire? What were the wind conditions? Temperature? Is the 100 yard group vertical or horizontal dispersion? What scope/settings? Light and sun conditions and position? Solid rest and bench? Good sandbags or rest? Different types of ammo tried? Any match ammo tried? And about 20 more variables to contend with!

Is the barrel free floated? Have you tried a shim in the fore end? The JW25 action is a copy of the CZ, and the CZ is generally regarded as an accurate firearm. I would definitely check the bedding, and try again.

"...my question mark isn`t responding..." You have the French key board selected.
"...maybe the Winchester Wildcat..." Yep. Try a box of as many brands as you can.

Ammunition is a big factor too. Lots of people I know have complained about poor accuracy out of their .22's but when they finally try a few things like decent ammo, a good front rest or bags and check the action screws etc... they are amazed at how well they actually shoot. One fellow I know had this old rifle that he said shot all over the place, I took it home, cleaned the barrel, action etc... torqued it properly and at 25m with iron sights I managed slightly under 3/8" off of my front rest and rear bag. A decent shooting .22 should group I think at least 1/2" to 3/4" consistently at 50m. The Winchester Wildcat Varminter would be a good choice, nice rifle.

My barrel is always sparkly clean, but its been a while since I've gone over the screws and such. There is really no way to free float the barrel on this beast as it has an upper handgaurd held on with a barrel band. Ammo could definitely be an issue as I usually just get the cheapest that Cambodian Tire has. Should probably also check my scope mount screws, have had issues with others in the past.
Thanks CGNers!!:)

A decent bolt action should do at least 3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 50 meters with BULK AMMO. (Sorry for the caps..just meant to emphasize that criteria). But my personal criteria is 1.5 inches at 100 meters. Not hard to do with the average Savage MKII### or Marlin 981T. My Marlin 60 semi-auto gets the same accuracy as well.

That means I can have fun for cheap.

Rifles that can do 3/4 inch groups with Target Ammo do not impress me because expensive ammo will defeat my main purpose in shooting .22LR.

It's not cheap, but here is my Anschutz 1418, it's basically a 1416 D KL but with a 1.5 " shorter barrel. I have a Leupold 4.5x-14x VX-3 mounted. I shoot Lapua Center X .22 LR.

All groups shot at 50 yards. FYI: Not all my groups are this tight, but I shot these three 5 shot groups back to back at The Shooting Edge. I had one mystery flier.

Beautiful groups, SmakDaddy. Makes me miss the 1416 with double set trigger I had in a previous life.:( Now all I have are cheapo Savages, Marlins and CZs...far cry from that 1416.
