I am going to be trying some varmint hunting and am looking at ordering a Stevens 200 in .22 centrefire .
I would llike to get it in .223 because I already shoot that calibre in my AR but I am woundering what the difference is between the .223, .22-250 and .243.

22-250 is about 400-500 fps faster than a 223, and burns almost 50% more powder. it is louder, and recoils more (but still very mild). it shoots flatter, hits harder, and drifts less in the wind.

243 is as fast as the 22-250 with 55 gr. bullets, but has the ability to load heavier bullets, up to 105 grains. Best for varmints are the 65-85 gr. loads. Not as fur friendly as the 22 calibers, if that is a consideration for you.

i would say it depends on what kind of varmints you intend to shoot, gophers or coyotes, if smaller, go with 223, ammo availability and cost is unbeatable. If you're chasing bigger critters, go with the 243, its the most versatile of all three

my 2 cents.

The 22-250 will give you an additional 100 - 150 yards of extreme range over the .223. Be honest with yourself and and ask whether or not you will be doing much shooting over 250 - 300 yards,. If the answer is yes then look at the 22-250 (or .243) If not stick with the .223.

The .223 uses a smaller case than the .22-250, hence lower velocities with the same bullet. For example, using a 55 grain jacketed bullet, the .223 runs between roughly 2500 fps and 3000 fps. The .22-250 runs from roughly 3100 fps and 3800 fps. Both depending on the load.
The .243 isn't a .22 calibre. It's a .24 calibre(6mm). It can use heavier bullets and be used for varmints or deer so it's more versatile.
