My neighbour gave me his old lakefeild mark II .22 to tinker with, and im stummped. The firing pin hits teh shell, leaving a small ding on the lip, but it isnt enough ignite the powder. The bolt doesnt come aprat fo get at the firing pin, as far as i can see. Any help would be great.

The bolt will come apart.
Take the bolt out of the rifle and push on the firing pin making it protrude into the bolt face. Is there adequate protrusion? It is possible that it has a broken tip, but if it is making light hits on the rim of the shell casing, it doesn't sound like it.
It could also be a weak spring inside the bolt or a dragging on the striker. Hard to guess without seeing.

Shooting some brake cleaner down the firing pin hole to clean out any muck that is in there may also help. If it's dragging in the goo it won't develop enough speed to set off the primer compound. Once the firing pin hole is cleaned out dribble a couple or three drops of light oil down the hole and let it drain through to the back of the bolt to lubricate the entire bolt insides.

From my playing with gun issues and doing some trigger mods I've found that the speed of the strike is more important than the actual power behind it. If the rim or primer isn't deformed fast enough the composition won't fire.

There is a half moon spring clip on the bolt, Take the spring clip out carefully so you do not stretch it, the firing pin will come right out. Clean in the groove the pin rides in with wd-40 and a piece of emery cloth you don't have to go crazy just clean the gunk out. Clean the wd40 out with brakleen put a light coat of gunoil on the firing pin and reassemble. I have a lakefield mII with over 50k rounds through it and still going strong. If using a lot of remington ammo expect to do this every 5-7000 rds fired all other ammo about every 10000 rds.

also, some 22LR rounds won't fire no matter what.
I kept 10 rounds from the same 333 round box that didn't want to fire no matter how many strikes on the rim.

You say "a small ding" If the firing pin is pointed, it will not work right - the idea being to crush the rim a little.

A 35 years ago memory of a Lakefield shows me a mind-picture of a flat-bar sort of pin with a sharp edge on the tip. If it is so - flatten it a tiny bit.

If the pin is then too short - gee - this sounds bad - but the back of the bolt can be shortened to allow the pin to extend further when struck.

Also - make sure that there is not excessive headspace on that gun.

Like BCRider says - the speed of the strike is very important - slick things up with 600 grit and finer paper, then wash things up nice inside.

Good Luck
