You can't beat a Savage/Stevens Cadet!

It is a very compact (16" barrel, 33" overall length) kid-sized single shot, and it is the only youth model I have seen with peep sights! And the best part is that they sell for well under the $200 mark. I picked one up at Russell Sports a few months ago for $179.99.

I think it is the best value in a youth model out there!

Ahhh... the Lakefield Mark I. That was my first rifle, I got one when I was 11. I still have it, I shot it last year. He must be a young fella' indeed if the Mark I is too big. Congrats for starting him off early :D. Uhh... I have nothing to add, just reminiscing ;).

Henry Chipmunk rifle comes to mind. Very small and it comes with peep sights I believe. You can get it in different colors too!

Not to split hairs :), but the Chipmunk isn't made by Henry, it was made by the Rouge Rifle company but they went out of business. The design was purchased by keystone sporting arms LLC, and is now sold under the Cricket name. But you are right, it is a very decent little rifle. But FWIW, I do like the sights on the Stevens Cadet a lot better. But that's just my opinion of course.

Ah the lakefield Mark 1....my 2 kids used one for years...I shortened the stock by cutting it and as they grew, I put on different recoil pads. They are in thier 20s now and still take the old girl out to plink. Cheap and easy to pick up a single and modify it for a shorter pull and then it can be used by more than 1 child.

Yes, you are correct :)

I fired the chipmunk a couple of times at our club and despite the fact that it was way to small for me it did seem like it would be a decent rifle for a younger guy. Never held or fired the "Steven Cadet" but from what I hear it is a good gun as well.

I bought my boy a Rouge Rifle Chipmunk 12 years ago. It weighs a bit over 2 pounds, has peep sights and is small enough for any kid. It cost $300 back then.
I'm sure that the "Chipmunk" name has been used by other companies in the past, I think it was CIL or Cooey.

I really like the Marlin 915YS, Great hi-viz sights, drilled and tapped and is grooved. Extremely accurate, 16" barrel, takes short, long and long rifle.
