Trying to find a decent .22 for a bit of plinking and small game. Thinking of something along the lines of the Mossberg 715T. I've seen a few that caught my eye, looking for more input, something that won't break the bank and that doesn't take the same mags as a pistol so 25 rounders would be usable.

Be aware that some of the 25 rounds mags for the 715T also are used in a pistol, thus prohibited in Canada. Search the threads, someone ordered from the States and had them seized by CBSA at the border.

Look into the Anschutz RX22 or ISSC MK22 for similar designs. There's also the ever-popular Ruger 22/10, and if you're not set on a semi-auto, the lever action Henrys are great in .22LR. :)

Yeah that's why I haven't bothered with it yet and am looking around for other options. Excellent I'll take a look at them thanks.

I could. But I do a fair bit accuracy shooting throughout the year and pre-hunting season with my 30-06 & 22-250, so my mindset now is to pick something up with a nice fun factor and very affordable ammunition. Thanks though!

A nice Cooey model 600/60! It's tube fed so no worries about pistol crossover. It's bolt action so you can focus on skill development and accuracy. It's light so you can carry it out and about while looking for small game. Has dovetail for mounting a scope if you so choose. The trigger on mine feels great. And it has a nice Canadian heritage. There's something special about these guns IMHO. Otherwise a Ruger 10/22 for the sheer number of options and versatility. Magazines are standard in 10 rounds but butler creek makes 25 round clips and a 110 round drum magazine made by GSG is also available. If you like to customize and tinker you can get/make a very specific rifle for yourself. I feel like it's a little brother to the AR platform. But maybe that's just me. In any case you probably won't end up with just one .22lr rifle so go with something that appeals to you. And try different types of Ammo. Good luck and have fun!

You said the C word :runaway:

This gonna be a good thread now!

I would recommend the usual players. The Marlin 795/60 or Ruger 10/22 for a semi. Marlin XT, Savage MKII, Ruger American, or any number of older models (such as a Cooey) in the bolt action world.

Fun factor = Henry leaver action or Marlin 795 semi or 1022. I have a blast with a friends Henry everytime we get out.

The 2 715t I had out shoot any stock 10/22 that I put it up against.
About 7 of them.
Sure the clamshell sucks but if the screws went into metal. I would not have sold mine!!!!!!

Another vote for the dynamic duo Marlin XT bolt. Or for semi The MArlin 795 bang for the buck is hard to beat accurate out of the box goodness.....i have both. Also have a 715 which i enjoy shooting for fun but not in same league for accuracy wouldnt bet my supper on it

I have stopped my search with my Savage MK2 FV SR. It is a great plinking rifle. Very accurate and Ive taken many grouse with it also.
My complaint is the stock, as with most savage rifles. Ive been waiting to order a boyds for it. If I was going to buy another, I would go with a CZ heavy barrel.

For the fun factor, go with a 10/22...lots of parts, totally reliable, light to carry, shoots every brand of ammo I've put into it perfectly. The cost is not very high when you think about what you're getting. If you like to have to file down parts of your gun straight out of the box and have mags stick and have the feel of a cheap Chinese-made kids toy, they go with a Mossberg.
Although my favourite .22 is the BSA Martini...a bit more money if you can find one in good shape.

I'm about to get heat for this but you should consider a Norinco JW-14. If you're looking for an accurate, reliable, bang for your buck plinking rifle have a look at these. Comes with a 10 round magazine, you can still get the champion 25 round mags. Strip it apart, clean the cosmoline out, reassemble. The ONLY issue I've had with mine was the trigger assembly screw was a loose when I first got my rifle. Tightened it up and I've had zero problems since then. Thousands of rounds through it without any FTF or FTE and I abuse this thing. All this for less than HALF the cost of a 10/22. If you can find a store with a few of these pick through the lot for a nice example.

Edit: Didn't realize you were looking for something "Tactical" when I wrote this.
