I have an old Marlin .22 rifle I just fixed up and had a chance to finally shoot it last Sunday. It has standard open sights. At 10 yards, it is consistantly shooting to the right of my aiming point 1-1 1/2 ". So, as I will have to drift my front sight to the right, is there any approximate amount one should drift it over, or is it just a move the sight and shoot, move the sight and shoot type of thing till I am happy? Thanks.

Thanks. That is what I was honestly thinking. I just won't be out shooting for a little while now so was hoping to line it up a bit better for next time I get out.

Bent barrel? 1" at 10y does sound drastic. I mean... Why is it off in the first place...

This rifle was a basket case when I bought it, and in pieces. I received the poorly repaired stock that was in 3 or 4 pieces barely hanging together, the barrel and receiver that was rusty, no rear sight, no trigger guard, and a bolt that looked decent that had a bad firing pin! So, I took the front sight out to strip and re-blue the barrel and receiver. Stupid me forgot to peen a dimple on the barrel to mark the sights location. As well, the rear sight was also missing, so I made one and installed it. Now as I type this, I am realizing that the rear sight is also in a dovetail, slot, so I can possibly move each a little in their respective directions. Thank you, and hope this clears things up a bit.

There is a formula for sight corrections, but with rimfire I usually shoot a couple (or three), adjust, shoot a couple more repeat until happy. My dad would make adjustments after a single shot, but my shooting skills/confidence mean I usually take 2 or 3.

Simply because it's fun to say: FART! (front away/ rear toward the direction you wish to move POI)

Had a slight problem with the rear sight. It was snug, but was able to move it in the slot with my fingers. Looked at a couple of remedies, and was about to try it, but turned the rear sight dovetail blank around and it is now tight in place and will require tools to adjust it. So, I am now officially back to square one again. Oh well, just got to wait for the weather to smarten up some again to go out shooting.
