Hey guys-figured this would be the best place to ask. I was pretty stoked to try my new-to-me 22 Hornet on the weekend, the range I was at maxed-out @ 100 yards, so I zeroed for that and was pretty stoked at the results. Reloads + 3 factory ammo types...and Hornady won the day. (PPU a close second) If I hunt with this thing, it'll be groundhogs and considering the range seldom exceeds 200, I ought to know what kind of drop to expect.

I don't own a chronograph but looking at the specs that use a 200 yard zero I'm not sure if there is a way to determine? After reading some discussions online, it sounds as though you could expect approx. 5" of drop @ 200 when zeroed @ 100, just wondering if that sounds right? Won't hunt until I know, so I'll be testing either way....

Probably worth noting, I zero my centerfire @ 100, rimfire @ 50. My centerfires are fast varmint calibers (including 17 Hornet) where you don't really have to sweat the drop between 100-200...but I am curious about this.

5" sounds about right.

Federal lists both 100 and 200yd zeros on their webpage, so if they have something similar you can use that as a rough idea of what you'll get. They only have one 22 hornet load, a 35gr bullet at 3000fps, and its dropping 19.1" rather than 17.5" at 300 when zero'd at 200. The Federal lists 6.1" of drop at 200 when zero'd at 100, so the Hornady should be close to that but a wee bit less.

Its crazy how fast those little bullets shed their velocity!

^hate to admit it, but I didn't realize that until I read the specs on the Hornady stuff today. For anyone not clicking the link, it loses almost 800fps. between the muzzle and 100 yards. It's barely bigger than a 22WMR and the bullets are pretty stubby...so not a huge shocker.

Never been a bigger-is-better type, and spent my second summer hunting groundhogs with a 22WMR. I know what it's capable of/at what distances so I have no 200 yard concerns. Other than the drop of course.

Looking at the data there, zero 3" high at 100y for a 200y zero. Should be moderately point and shoot like that at anything within 200y.

Appreciate the input guys. I will stretch it to 200 in the next few weeks, and get a hard # with this ammo. Gonna be fun!
