Hi,
I have my eye on a 1885 Browning Lo-wall.in 22 hornet.I would
like something stronger
Questions:
Is the action strong enough to go to a 22-250.
If yes does it mean a barrel change?or just reaming out
the chamber.
I want to stay with a falling block action.
Is the bullet dia,in both the same.
Thanks Guys

This the modern rifle? It came in .243 Win and .260 Rem as well so it should be strong enough. However, the Hornet is a thick rimmed cartridge, so it won't be just a ream job. You'd have to change the extraction to rimless for the .22-250. The Hornet bullet diameter can be either .223 or .224. One thou won't matter much.
Have a look at the .225 Winchester. Semi-rimmed cartridge with the same ballistics as the .22-250 and a .224" bullet. Thinner rim though. It'd need a bit of extraction modification too, but not nearly as much as going to a rimless case. Then ream the chamber.(finding a smithy with the reamer may be an issue) The difference in OAL between it and the Hornet is .777". The .225 will give you starting load velocities with a 50 grain bullet between 2710fps and 3174fps. The Hornet runs at 2375fps and 2422fps with the same bullet.
Epp's lists the ammo and I seem to recall seeing it in Crappy Tire too.

Before you do it I would check the twist rate, on the hornet , iirc the rate is not fast enough to stabilise heavier projectiles.

Double that ...

It has the wrong twist to start with and it is expensive to do anything to that particular rifle. They are a pain to work on.

22 Hornet to 22-250?

Thanks for all that guys.
It seems to me the KHornet is my best option.
More questions:Does this mean just a reaming, and no extraction alteration?
Is the K Ammo available over the counter,or a home grown wildcat?
Is my lack of savvy starting to show?
CGNutters are a great bunch.

The extractor will not have to be touched. The barrel will have to be reset after the chamber is cut but that should not be too big a deal. The most important thing is the skill of the gunsmith who will have to deal with both sizing the chamber correctly and getting the sights on the barrel "straight-up" at the same time.

A properly cut K-Hornet chamber will allow you to use factory 22 Hornet ammo until you learn to reload. (Just remember not to throw away all that new fire-formed K-Hornet brass ;) )

In my opinion your best option is to use it as it is.

Your next best option is to spend hundreds of dollars to convert to a K Hornet and buy the dies required... all to gain a few feet per second...

Id have to agree with guntech. Seems like alot of unecessary effort and money for little gain. Stick with the 22 hornet or sell it and buy a rifle in the caliber you really want.
