.22 hornets

I have a ZKW 465, excellent little rifle in k-hornet and it really likes the S&B shells (but the are slow). I've taken skunks, coyotes, and a whitetail with it.

I don't find that for gophers and coyotes the bigger 22's offer me any real advantage as I am not a good enough shot.

I have an Anschutz full stock carbine, model 1533 on the match 54 action. Wonderful rifle that came with double set triggers which I replaced with a single adjustable trigger. It's about perfect for me. I have shot several coyotes with it, it is perfectly adequate within 150 yards or so, but they do run a short ways before expiring - maybe 20 yds or so with a double lung shot. My .222 rifles ( I currently have 3) definitely kill quicker, but not deader! I also had a TC Contender carbine in .22 Hornet. I'm still kicking myself that I sold that one. It was light, handy, had a wonderful trigger, and was as accurate as any rifle I've ever owned. It was pretty too, with very nice figured walnut and high polish steel. Much better than the current Encore lineup.

I have the Handi Hornet of late production. Hardly a vintage classic but part of a very long line of working guns. I chose it over nicer CZ (own a lefty 223 527) due to its 9"twist. Having the ability to handle heavier bullets a positive for coyotes. One chooses to accept limitations with any caliber. Range is the Hornet limitation but imposing limits is what being a sportsman is all about. One never questions the desire of a bow hunter to place severe limits, that is the challenge. I place the Hornet as a 150 yard coyote gun with a responsible marksman. On the farm many coyotes have died due to the 22LR just as many deer have died due to the 30-30.
