Back in the day it was used for about everything. It's always kinda interested me and the right single shot may still empty my bank account if I found one however I'm left wondering about it's performance. The odd bullet diameter for one but how where the traditional bullets constructed? Were they just cup and core bullets with exposed lead tip? Would a 70gr bullet from a 223 be an equal comparison?

One of my older Sgt's swore by this chambering for all his hunting. Of course it was a Savage 99 TD. The rifle has always intrigued me, but as the OP pointed out, there are other more affordable options available.

It's use has been well documented thru India and Africa on big and dangerous game. Not what I'd choose either but I've always been curious about the construction of those bullets used. 70gr .228" bullet at 2700 to 2800fps
Be a great coyote round

I've got one of those 99's chambered in 22HP takedown, I've been able to find some factory ammo 5.6x54r made by S&B but it runs about $60 a box of 20. Haven't shot anything with it yet but took to the range and was very accurate with iron sights in the 4 test rounds I shot. Very impressive for a 100 year old rifle. From what I've read, using a .223 projectile will not provide accurate results, the brass can also be formed from necked down 30-30win.

It has been suggested the esteemed Rev did it ...just to do it. It failed on a few instances IIRC

Yes it can. https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...2-Forming-22-Savage-Hi-Power-from-30-30-brass The link to forming 25-35 Win is in that post, and show the steps before final sizing to 22HP.

In two of my 5.6X52R rifles, 55-60gr .224" bullets shoot acceptably well. Inch and a half groups at 100 yards. Heavier bullets group a bit under two inches.

Ted

Had great uncle used one to hunt with for years. He shot 6 elk at one time even then got hold of family to come out near Cochrane to tag them. Brno made a nice over and under in it with a 12 gauge barrel.

There is one for sale on the EE….

I don’t think I’d ever want to see this .22 get mangled up by a lion.
I’ve heard different things about accuracy using.224 projectiles with varying results from gun to gun.
Loaded some up but haven’t been out to try them yet.

Ballistically it is very much like the 223 with 70 grain bullets. Nothing at all wrong with it for deer.
